Battery will not hold a charge

The computer will turn off when not plugged in or the battery dies very quickly.

Battery is dead

When the power adapter is unplugged, the computer shuts off immediately. To replace the battery, remove the back panel and remove the screws holding in the battery. For help replacing the battery, look at the replacement guide here.

Battery is faulty

When the power adapter is unplugged, the computer battery depletes much quicker than normal. The battery is at end of life and needs replacement. To replace the battery, remove the back panel and remove the screws holding in the battery. Follow the replacement guide here.

Laptop gets very hot to the touch when charging

When the laptop is charging there is excessive heat is being produced, the battery is failing and needs replacement. To replace the battery, remove the back panel and remove the screws holding in the battery. For help replacing the battery, look at the replacement guide here.

Fan making noise/clicking

The cooling fan is louder than normal.

Fan is dirty

Look at laptop air intake for dust. If present, use a compressed can air cleaner to remove dust from the fan.

Fan is clicking

The fan is hitting an obstruction inside the laptop. First try using compressed air through the holes in the back panel in the middle of the laptop. Otherwise, the laptop needs to be disassembled to remove the obstruction. Remove the back panel, then remove the fan making sure to unscrew the heat-sink as well. Computer does not boot up

The computer does not boot up upon powering.

Computer blue screens

When starting up the computer, boot in safe mode to find the bad application or driver causing the issue and repair it by rolling back the update.

Hard drive corrupted

Boot up the computer in safe mode and select system restore or startup repair in an attempt to resolve the damaged files.

Computer displays warning “hard drive not detected” or “hard drive not found”

Remove the bottom panel of the laptop and ensure the hard drive is fully seated in the connection port. If the error still appears after verifying the connection. The hard drive has failed and needs replacement. For help replacing the hard drive, check out the replacement guide here.

Speakers have static/distorted noise

Speaker sounds are scratchy or constant static.

Speakers are dirty

Check visually for dirt/debris in the speakers and clean with compressed air or a toothbrush. If the problem persists, the speaker may be damaged and needs replacement.

Speaker wire connections broken

Speaker is momentarily producing noise or none at all. The laptop will need to be disassembled to fix wiring connections or replace the speaker.

Microphone is on but not registering sounds

Microphone detects loud noises or tapping on laptop but no other noises.

Microphone drivers are out of date or damaged.

Update or re-download drivers for the microphone using the HP support webpage found here.

The microphone is disconnected from the housing.

The laptop will need to be disassembled to reattach the microphone properly to the housing.
