Dell OptiPlex 7090 Micro SMD power button sourcing?

Block Image

I have a Dell OptiPlex 7090 Micro on my bench. It has intermittent response to the power button. Upon investigation I found the plastic shroud that extends out from the button is broken in half and part missing (great design from dell...) basically the mechanical component that gets pressed is a hollow tube surrounding the power status LED instead of, say, a solid tube of clear plastic.

Well, anyway. I'm looking to source a replacement SMD power button so I can solder on a new one, but I'm having problems sourcing it besides the old 'look for a whole broken PC of the same model as a donor' route. Seems wasteful, and since it is a relatively new model, also expensive. I want to make sure to get an exact replacement as it needs to have the power LED in the center of the button. See pictures for reference. Thank you for taking a look!

@isaacmehler just to reiterate what my colleague is saying. You may need to try and match the switch from another board. Here is the schematics that @jayeff linked to D8 MFF AF (Dell Optiplex 5050M 7050M) The power button on this is shown on page 49

Going by that description, it is a Diptronics 4 position 2 hold illuminated switch. Now, head over to Mouser.com and check those switches You most likely can match it up. I am sure there are other places then Mouser as well, its just that I know their stuff. No, I don't get any kickbacks :-)

This is not an answer but a mere augmentation to what my colleague has already referred to.

Sorry, I could not attach the boardview on here. but let me know if you want it so I can provide that for you as well.

Thank you, that specific part of the schematics will be helpful when comparing pinouts if I can find a compatible part. Also thank you for pointing out the brand used in the earlier version Optiplex - since Mouser does have that brand it is likewise quite useful. Now I just need to do my favorite nerd activity: reading spec sheets!

@isaacmehler

There are two sites that I look at.

This one has free downloads for a lot of different motherboards. Knowing the board model number helps when using the search function on the page. Unfortunately, your board doesn't show up nor any other Optiplex board either.

This one you have to join to download, which I haven't done as I don't need it day to day. I linked this page because it "might" be that the schematic linked for a 7050 will show the switch/LED part type and hopefully it is the same as the one used in your motherboard. Manufacturers often don't change these type of parts between models. Worth a look anyway.

Is there any info on the switch/LED itself?

Hi @isaacmehler

Search online for TPW6N (example only).

This is the Dell part number for the front bezel for a micro Optiplex 7090 which includes the Power button.

Can't tell if there's provision for the LED light to shine through the Power button in the bezel or not. Given its clear/white plastic? and not black. it might (see image below).

Also not sure if the price suits you ;-)

Hi @isaacmehler

Here's a product sheet from Diptronics that may be compatible with the type you need.

Found them on Mouser by searching online for the product code MLC-63WAQA

Sorry, I can see how my description may have been misleading. The part I am looking for is the surface mount combination button/LED that is the power switch. I need to desolder the broken power switch and replace it with a new one.

If you look at the 2nd and 3rd pictures, you can see the plastic that extends out from the SMD power button is broken and half of it is gone - this is part of that SMD component and not part of the front bezel.

@isaacmehler

What is the make and model number of the motherboard?

Usually the board schematics show the part number (or specifications) for all the parts on the board?

- de

@jayeff Looks like it is IPRKL-BO65/DGFX. At first I thought it was 8065 instead of B065, but a comparative google search pretty clearly showed me the ambiguous character is a 'B'. Uploaded picture showing motherboard model number.

Edit: I did also make a general attempt to find a board schematic with no success, however this was just with using google as well. If there are specific sites more suited to finding schematics I would love to know, as that would be a great tool to have in the toolbox.

@jayeff Thank you for the links, I like knowing about those resources. I have found the specific model of switch... but even having the manufacturer and model I'm still having sourcing problems. Seems neither Mouser nor Digikey carry the HIGHLY brand. Currently trying to see if it's on AliExpress.

Update: I'm pretty sure I've found it. Going to answer my own post so anyone else looking for this answer doesn't have to re-invent this particular wheel.

TL;DR: https://www.highly-elec.com/product/illu...

I started looking at the switch under my microscope, searching for any usable markings. On the broken plastic area I can make out the number '13' though I'm not sure if that is a partial number, but on the rear of the switch was the payoff: 'HIGHLY' - which is a Chinese electronics manufacturer that specializes in switches.

Measuring the size of the switch at on the side (horizontal axis when facing the 'front' of the power switch) measured at roughly 6.5mm, hard to be exact since I'm having to eyeball things a bit (it's a tight fit and I can't quite get the jaws of my caliper around the part). Once I found the brand name and started looking through their products, I found one that visually looked right in the 'Tact Switch' category and found 'Model:TP6152 Series'. This has a couple different physical models and then different LED color options. These switches contain 2 different LEDs to provide 2 color options: the Optiplex uses (I believe) White and some Yellow variant - the spec sheet offers either Yellow or Amber, so I'm honestly not sure which would be correct. I'll also probably need to take out the switch and manually power the LEDs to see which LED is which color.

Note: it seems neither Mouser nor Digikey carry HIGHLY brand... finding the part may be a chore.

Edit: oldturkey03 found a brand from a prior Optiplex Micro that Mouser does carry, should someone else run into this in the future, this is currently looking like the way to go since I'm having a heck of a time sourcing the HIGHLY brand part.
