Digitiser active area reduced after screen replacement

I have just replaced a display on my spectre x360 notebook after cracking the old one. It was a hinged up assembly, plug and play so all went well.

After powering up I realised the touch inputs were completely inverted in both X and Y axis’. Also the active area of the digitiser was smaller, i.e. 0,0 origin is at the top left corner of screen but the right 2 inches and bottom 1 inch let's say, of the screen, are not registering any touch/pen inputs.

I was able to recalibrate the inverted problem using tabcal utility with custom points and the novalidate switch, however still haven't managed to get the digitiser to register over the full screen area.

It is behaving as if the digitiser thinks the screen is in 2560x1440 when it is really 3840x2160 (for example). Drawing from left edge to right edge, the cursor follows the stylus until about 2” from the right side of screen where it just dissapears, as if it has gone off the edge of the screen.

Any thoughts welcomed! Thanks

I never did sorry. Probably never picked up the stylus again since, so it hasn't worried me. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful

Hi @joshnz,

Did you get the correct display assembly for your model laptop?

What is the model number of the laptop?

The HP part number for the display assembly i.e. LCD + digitizer + bezel shown in the HP Envy x360 15m-bq021dx maintenance and service guide from this website is 925736-001.

Usually the part number is printed on the assembly somewhere

The manual also shows that there is a separate digitizer panel control board.

Did you try updating the AMD Virtual buttons driver or uninstalling them in Device Manager, restarting the laptop and letting Windows "find" and install them again?

I realize that this is for screen rotation but you did say the the axis was inverted

@joshnz

Just wondering if the touchscreen fully works in BIOS?

If not go into Device Manager > HID entry for the touchscreen, right click on the entry > Properties > Events > Information Box and get the VID and PID info for the touchscreen.

Use that to search for the manufacturer of the touchscreen and see if they have drivers for it.

To the best of my knowledge a touchscreen uses ~10 wires in a 40 wire eDP cable. The image below is an example only and may not apply in your case but the point I’m trying to make is that if there is a hardware problem in the touchscreen e.g. X and Y axis can’t be extended far enough then the data can’t be sent to the motherboard on the USB data wires from the touchscreen controller in the screen assembly.

If you can’t find specific drivers for the touchscreen, and if the original still worked before replacement, then you may have to replace the screen to find out if the problem is in the display assembly or back in the motherboard.

Hi @jayeff thanks for your comment, actually I couldn't find the specific model number on ifixit so have used the closest available. Model no. is HP Spectre x360 - 15-df1016tx. Screen purchased was stated as model 15-df only (assumed this was a series?). It appears to be identical.

I have since discovered removing the HID touch screen driver and installing the generic HID digitizer driver, resolved the inverted issue by itself. But I am still stuck with the reduced area.

Hi @joshnz ,

I’m thinking that you may have got the wrong display assembly and judging from what I’ve found below it can be confusing if just going on the laptop model series and not the laptop product number.

There are three different display assemblies (basically two) available for the HP Spectre x360 15 series shown in the maintenance service guide (see p.17 Item #1), taken from this support webpage for your model. It depends on the screen resolution which one you have. 2 are UHD displays (only difference is the colour of the bezel, cover etc) and 1 is a FHD display (though it has the same colour as one of the UHD models).

I don’t know what a FHD screen looks like when trying to work at UHD resolution but suspect it shouldn’t work at all.

Just to confuse the issue, on the HP PartSurfer website for your exact model (scroll down to Display) it shows a different part number (L64027-001) to what is in the service manual. The PartSurfer information is for your exact model whereas the service manual is generic for the series. Maybe something changed before/after your model was built?

Verify that the product number of your laptop (found on the information label underneath the laptop), matches what I’ve linked in PartSurfer to make sure that I’ve linked your exact model. If it is different, use the PartSurfer webpage to find your exact product number and check what it shows.

You may have to check for a HP part number on the replacement display assembly to confirm that you have the correct one. Also check if there is a part number on your original display assembly as well, if you still have it.

If you have the correct one then it could also just be a faulty digitizer.

Hi @jayeff thanks again for all your effort here!

Some more info on this model, back label + HP scan confirm the same. ProductID-8CF10PA#ABG, S/N#5CD9378527, model 15-df1016TX. Everything looks correct in your PartSurfer search.

It is certainly a UHD screen (the original). The seller certainly specified replacement was UHD and 3840x2160 resolution. I am running this resolution with new display and it looks great (also windows 10 has it marked as recommended).

I think I remember reading FHD, 4k, whatever you find the lower resolution model referred to was a different ribbon interface (different number of pins) and would not plug in at all.

Searching for L64027-001 feels a bit like searching for a 100 year old part. Nothing that mentions new or otherwise, only obsolete. It was purchased new in 2020 FWIW.

Without prying open the display I am unable to find any part no.s. Separating bezels and LCD+digitizers with heat has always spelled the beginning of the end for me..!

With the generic HID digitizer driver installed, the X and Y axis' are correct natively, and the touch input accuracy and response are perfect (with the exception of the reduced active area) - this has me thinking it is something much more simple, like the digitizer is missing information about the LCDs resolution. Whether this is a setting or a driver issue, and how to change it I am at a loss :(. Are there other generic digitizer drivers I could try, just to see if I can get some response in that dead zone?

@joshnz

Really stupid idea but did you try to recalibrate the touchscreen in Control Panel > Tablet PC settings

I haven't got a touchscreen Win 10 PC but found this link which may help.

Apologies if you've tried this already.
