Display coming away from back of screen assembly, still functional.

As per the title, the double sided tape holding the display to the rest of the screen assembly appears to have failed. The screen still functions as well as the webcam, so it doesn't seem like any connecting cables have been damaged yet. Photos are attached below.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to re-adhere the screen to the assembly with 8mm tesa tape (or some other kind of adhesive). I would prefer to salvage the display assembly if I can, the cost of a new assembly is a bit prohibitive at the moment.

I would say most definitely you should try replacing the adhesive to repair your screen rather than trying to replace it, especially since it's still working. I give Dell kudos for supplying their service and maintenance manuals to the public, but sadly it doesn't go into quite the level of detail you would need; the closest it comes is in showing you how to remove the entire display assembly.

Unfortunately, none of the screen replacement videos gives that kind of detail either. I'm not at all clear why no one seems to be inclined to replace the LCD without swapping out the entire display assembly, but you have a slight advantage in the fact that yours has already started self-disassembling.

Most of the time laptop LCD replacements don't require removing the display assembly from the main body of the laptop and I can't find any information on whether you'll be able to do that on yours or not. You might see how far you can get without taking it off; if something is hanging up your work you can always remove it at any time.

Just for completeness here's a video showing that process just in case you need it; hopefully you won't.

The info I've found online seems to imply that removing the display from the assembly has a high risk of damaging the display which is likely why there's no documentation on that. As you mentioned though mine is already detached so there's little risk of damage.

I'll probably still remove the full assembly first so I don't risk damaging the display cable while I work.

Do you think the 8mm tesa tape would be the best bet here or is there another alternative you think would be better?

I'll also try to be mindful of documenting my fix so I can post it for the community.

@vaughnstark The Tesa tape is definitely the way to go; it is commonly used on many screen devices and resembles what we can see of the exposed adhesive. I'd suggest taking good pictures first, then cleaning it off completely with 90% or higher concentration isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Use the tesa tape to recreate the original layout as close as possible, which will probably include quite a bit of trimming of the tape. Getting the wider version will allow you to use it in most places, as you can always trim it narrower as needed.
