If the USB ports on your Lenovo Thinkpad L490 aren't detecting any USB connected to the device, follow this guide to help diagnose the issue.
Physical connection not plugged in properly
The first thing that should be checked is the ports themselves or any cables/devices that are connected to the laptop itself.
- Look for any debris or damage in the ports. Use a flashlight to see if either any pins are misaligned, missing, or if there is corrosion in the ports themselves. To clean the computer without disassembling the computer, follow the directions for this guide here. To disassemble the laptop so you can do a more thorough clean, look at this guide for further instructions.
- Test your device with different cables to see if the cables are broken
Outdated drivers
When you update your OS, your drivers could eventually be out of date. When this happens, hardware on your laptop could either not function properly or not function at all. Follow this guide to help you install your drivers for your Lenovo Thinkpad L490
BIOS settings error
The Bios is part of your OS that helps start your computer up and make sure the hardware is working as intended. Setting the BIOS on default settings could guide the laptop's components to function again. Follow the guide here to guide you through navigating the BIOS
Not following the directions closely could mess up your OS or have your devices not function. If you are unsure or not comfortable navigating through the BIOS, please do not attempt to navigate through your BIOS settings
Windows out of date
If your Operating System is not up to date, this could cause different components not to function as intended.
Third party application interference
Sometimes, specific programs can disable certain applications and functions to your laptop.
- Powering the device in safe mode can make sure any third-party applications is causing any conflict with the ports themselves. Follow this guide to start it up in safe mode.
Power not fluctuating properly on fans
Sometime a laptop or PC does not distribute enough power evenly to other parts of the computer. Running a power cycle can sometimes reestablish power to the right areas of the computer. In order to do this, follow the steps below:
- Shut down the laptop
- Remove the battery. Follow this guide for proper battery removal
- Hold the power button for 15 seconds
