Asus Chromebook C300SA-DS02 Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting page discussing common problems with the Asus Chromebook C300SA-DS02 laptop.

Screen Brightness is Low

The screen brightness is all the way up but it still seems dark.

Brightness Settings

How bright your screen is can be adjusted to your preference. On the top row of your keyboard there are two buttons that increase and decrease brightness. Press the one that looks like a large sun and keep pressing it until the brightness is as desired.

Display Driver Software

The software behind your screen could be outdated and isn’t working properly. In order to update your driver, follow these steps: Click start >> Search for Device Manager >> Display Adapters >> Right click Intel HD Graphics and chose Update Graphic Software.

Faulty Screen

This problem is a manufacturer issue. If you want to continue using the device you have to buy a new screen and replace it. Perhaps one could purchase and install a new screen.

Device does not hold charge

The battery doesn't hold a charge for long. I need to keep it plugged in.

Power Off

Rather than putting your device on "power save mode" or "sleep mode", consider turning off your device if you plan to not use it for several hours. The device is still active when these modes are turned on, while it saves time, it does not save your battery life.

Bad Charger

There is a possibility that the charger itself is not working properly. In that case you could purchase a new charger.

Bad Battery

Replacing the battery, like the screen, would be the best solution. This seems to be yet another manufacturer issue. Unfortunately it seems the best way to solve this would be to get an entirely new battery and replace it.

Screen Flickering

The screen images becomes distorted in quick outbreaks. Usually associated with movement of the screen.

Faulty Screen-Cable Connection

Remove the battery and back panel of the laptop to access the screen-cable ribbon. The ribbon will be at the back and will travel through the rotating joint that connects the screen to the rest of the laptop. Make sure the ribbon is connected properly to the motherboard. Because of its location, the ribbon does do a fair bit of moving; make sure the tension is evenly distributed and can move back and forth. If the cable is too tight in one spot, it may lose connection when the screen is moved. Try pushing some of the ribbon into the rotating joint.

Damage to the Screen-Cable Ribbon

If the connection is secure and the problem persists, the ribbon may have taken damage from the screen being moved throughout time. At this point, the ribbon will have to be replaced.

Screen Import Terminal is Damaged

The input terminal on the screen could have damage preventing a proper signal from being received. The input terminal can’t be replaced and will require the replacement of the entire screen.

Black Screen

The screen turns black while browsing on the computer.

Dead battery

If the laptop's battery does not have charge it will die, and when it does so the laptop will power off and the screen will turn black right away. To turn back on your laptop, plug in the charger on the computer as well as on the wall outlet. Since the computer is completely dead it might take a couple of minutes for it to turn back on.

Hardware Issue

First step you should disable GPU compositing on all pages. To do so you should first create a Google Chrome shortcut Desktop, if you don’t have one already. After creating a shortcut, right click the shortcut and select properties >>shortcuts>> target window “[space]–disable-gpu” >>save changes. Now open Chrome and go to settings >> show advanced settings>> disable hardware acceleration. After following all these steps just restart your computer.

Chrome flags issues

In order to get rid of the black screen try to disable some of the chrome flags. The following flags are the ones which should be disabled: GPU compositing on all pages, Threaded compositing and Do SHOW Presents with GD. To disable these flags go to the Chrome address bar and type chrome://flags/. The flags mentioned above will appear and make sure you disable all of them. After disabling these flags restart your chrome.

External Connections

First make sure you power off your laptop completely ( do not restart or hibernate, but Power Off). Once it is completely powered off, connect an external monitor to the laptop. Turn on the external monitor. Make sure your external monitor is turned on and after that turn on your laptop as well. You may have to press an "external monitor" button. Could be the f4 button or a button with two monitors on it, for the external monitor to work.

No Sound

Computer is functioning normally, but no audio or sound comes out of the speakers.

Speakers/Headphones

Make sure that no cable is plugged into the headphone jack of the computer. A cable will stop any audio from coming out of the built-in speakers.

Volume Mixer Settings

On the bottom right corner of your screen, click on the speaker symbol and make sure the volume slider is not all the way down. Then, click on the Mixer option to view audio output for individual applications. Move the audio slider to the desirable volume under the application you wish to alter.

Incorrect Audio Drivers

It is possible that the problem lies in the audio device software in the computer. View your audio device by accessing >>Start Menu >>Control Panel >>System >>Device Manager >>Sound Video and Game Controllers. Right click Audio Device and click uninstall. Restart your laptop and the audio devices will reinstall with the correct drivers.

Speaker Settings

Right click on your speaker icon on the bottom right and click on Playback Devices. Then click >>Speakers >>Properties >>Enhancements and disable all enhancements. Apply the changes and click Okay.

Speakers Broken

If the problem doesn’t lie in the software of the computer, then the problem is most likely a hardware issue. At this point, it is advised that the speakers be replaced.
