mine had black discs but everything else is the same as shown here. Each disc has delicate contacts that must be cleaned with isopropil alchohol too, but wit great care they can bend easily (happened to me, had to use magnifier and super fine tweezers to repair) Excellent guide btw!
I successfully completed this guide to replace termal paste on the CPU, since this computer has never received service since 2008… Old paste was not terribly dry but undoubtedly needed replacement. This is the second time I’ve opened my old iMac, it was not that hard, definitively the comments were essential for some steps!
Great to save my iMac for some 10 more years, my children use it for fun and school daily and is (still) a very nice computer.
excellent guide, very informative, I did not change anything but just put apart every single piece to eliminate water from a computer from a neighbor, as I was told tea was spilled on it and the owner left it on rice -probably worsen the situation. I found water (and rice) on several components including battery, motherboard and chasis. several chips were with sulphate but after cleaning with isopropil alcohol and brush carefully, the computer started and worked!!
thanks iFixit, with some education from your posts, I`ve been able to save many macs and other stuff from trash bin, good for your economy and the planet, win-win!
