Laptop powers up but screen is black
I can power up the laptop but the screen stays black.

Shane Mettler could be a bad screen or even a bad GPU. Let's narrow it down. Install an external screen to it and let us know if that shows anything. If it does it is most likely your screen that needs to be replaced.
The other thing you can try is that you turn your laptop on in a darkened room, then use a flashlight and shine the beam at an angle against your screen. If you can make out the desktop, you are having a backlight issue.
