The plastic case is U shaped and will spread open from the back. I use my thumbs to spread it open and push it forward till it comes off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FlySnyJ0...

None of the above correctly describes how to open the My Book Studio LX. The 2 TB Version has P/N WBDACH0020HAL-00. The case is silver colored aluminum, there are no visable screws, and two thin rubber feet on the bottom of the case, which should be left attached, as they are rubber-cemented in place, and do not cover any screws. The rear panel has a power jack, a mini-USB 2.0 port, 2 FireWire 800 ports, a security slot, and a power button.

The case cover is held in place by spring clips located on each side of the back spine of the drive. To open the drive, a spudger should be inserted in the curved slot at the front top and bottom of the drive. Spread the gap open carefully, and the spring clips should give way, allowing the cover to move forward to remove. Screwdrivers could also be used, with the risk of scratching the aluminum.

Trying to open along the rear spine will only dislodge the rivited spring clips and damage the case, so work at spreading the front top and bottom areas.

I have the wdbach0010hal-00 which I believe is just the 1TB version of this drive and I'm trying to open this drive up. When you say "a spudger should be inserted in the curved slot at the front top and bottom of the drive" do you mean, when looking at the top of the drive, the shape looks like a "U" where the open part of the "U" is the rear of the drive, so insert the spludger at the bottom of the "U" closest to the front of the drive and pry? Same for top and bottom. Thank you --- tjclark

@Tim: Correct, use a spudger at the top and bottom curved areas. You need to insert plastic cards (such as old credit cards, or you can try a screwdriver) along the straight sides (at the rear sides of the case) to release the clips holding the cover on. As it comes apart, the outer case cover will slide forward (towards the front of the case) and eventually come free. I caution everyone not to try this unless you are out of warranty, as the likelihood of damaging the clips that attach the cover to the case is great.

Thank you, I finally found a picture of another model with a screw to remove at first, but that gave me the idea to try sliding a rigid plastic card.

It is always difficult at first because of the unknown we fear of breaking something, but finally I managed to drag the "U".

Now I have to try the HD with another casing...

I take it you got it open. If you don't have an external enclosure to put the drive in. if you have an easy open Mac like a G5 iMac, drop in the Mac and start up from your system installation disk, go to the second screen pull down menu to Disk Utilities and see if you can repair or reformat the drive. Use the "write zero" option to make sure you have no bad blocks

@mayer - the mybook studio LX is aluminum so whatever case you were opening is the not the external enclosure that is being discussed here.

@gregorylem - if you figured out how to open an LX would you mind posting it here? I've searched everywhere and can't figure it out.

Derek - I'd really be interested in what you had to say, if you'd ever opened one of these. I see no reason for this one to open any other way. You only need about a quarter of an inch flex.

Did anyone ever figure out how to open the My Book Studio LX aluminum drive case? I found this article that mentions you can open it by first removing four small phillips head screws:

http://www.storagereview.com/western_dig...

However, I seem to only see four slotted screws and they seem to be plastic and won't turn when I attempt to use a screwdriver.
