There are lots of reasons why a car goes into limp mode.
-The main reason it does this is to protect the engine from any further damage.

Best thing to do is to get the car's OBDII port scanned using a scan tool, to see what codes are being shown.
These codes will tell you what is wrong with the car.
In the USA major auto parts retail chains will do this for free apparently
