Hi Jody, Thats the contact clip that goes around the mute on/off switch on the side of the handset. You'll find that it doesnt work as when you switch the mute button across, the little hook shape part pulls another hard switch internally. Can always adjust the volume settings internally via the phone settings if you cant be bothered stripping it down again. Cheers
