Introduction

My name is Laura Heffernan, I am in my third year at the University of Rhode Island. I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, with a minor in Landscape Architecture.

Aspirations

I have had several different kinds of jobs that have led me to where I am today, ranging from a bartender to a construction worker. Taking lessons, skills, and experiences away from these jobs have helped me grow tremendously. I hope to apply what I have learned from real world experience, as well as my academic knowledge, to a career and life that is substantial. My interests include reading, music, movies, art, and woodworking. Woodworking is a hobby that I have been practicing since I was 11, a hobby that has led me to an education in Civil Engineering.

Technical Experience and Skills

Over the course of my academic career I have written many technical pieces, mainly lab reports. In order to efficiently write a lab report, one must be concise, clear, and cohesive. Some skills that I have learned over the years is strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, time management, organization, and dedication.

Project and Repair Experience

As previously mentioned, I have a passion for woodworking and art. Over the years I have learned to combine these passions to build many different things. I have built handmade bookshelves, vinyl record storage, a custom wooden bar, several dressers, chairs, and have started a small business making custom cedar window boxes. In high school I was very involved in the art department and went onto win 6 state recognized art awards.

Project Qualifications

In terms of my art and woodworking skills, I am self taught. I have learned through trail and error, but I would not be as far as I am currently if it wasn’t for instructional “DIY” articles and videos. That is why I believe my experience relates to this project, because I have utilized numerous instructional and/ or informational articles and videos to help me personally. I have seen what works and what doesn’t, instructions shouldn’t be left up to interpretation, they should be clear, concise, and cohesive.
