Batteries get warm/hot when passing a lot of current either charging or discharging because of the internal battery resistance.

If you are using it and it gets very hot, either the battery is bad or the device is drawing too much current. For a vacuum, it could be a bad motor, a very tight brush roller, or plugged airways.
