It has been almost a month since I last worked on the Moto Z 2 Play and the last repair seems to have succeeded. After damaging the original screen on an earlier attempt, I installed a new screen using B7000 adhesive. For a clamp, I stacked two spare 3.5in hard drives on a piece of packing foam to weigh down the screen. After letting it sit overnight, the phone powered on successfully and the screen has stayed put since - a much better bond than the adhesive strips gave.
My take-away from this repair is that I’ll probably not touch another Moto Z 2 Play because of how sensitive the proximity sensor is to screen separation (and how much the screen wanted to separate) but if I had to, liquid adhesive definitely seems to be the way to go. Just make sure not to clamp too hard like I did on my first attempt. I still have concerns about how hard it would be to get back into the phone if I had to make another repair but if I’m lucky, I’ll never find out.
