Sometimes you may need to replace your bike brake cables when they become frayed, rigid, or no longer fit for use. This guide will show you how to replace the front brake cable of a Giant Iguana Mountain bike. You should exercise caution when using cable cutters, but otherwise, no special skills are needed or hazards to look out for. From the time you start the repair to the time you complete it, your front brake will be completely unusable. Ensure you have the time to finish before you need to ride again.

    • Using your hex screwdriver, loosen this bolt to release the clamp, allowing the brake cable to be removed from the caliper.

    • Remove the fixed-length brake cable from its slot.

    • This cable comes out of the left side of the cable splitter, and that is fixed to the cable splitter.

    • Note how the cable runs through the splitter, as you will have to run the new brake cable through in the same manner later.

    • Follow the brake cable to the trigger housing and unscrew the bolt that secures the brake cable to the housing.

    • Use needle nose pliers to slide the brake cable from the housing unit.

    • There should be a slot between the housing and associated screw that allows for the cable to slide out.

    • Lay out the removed brake cable along the new brake cable housing.

    • This will allow you to measure how long you need your new section of cable housing to be.

    • Use your cable cutters to make a clean cut on the new brake cable housing liner.

    • Ensure your cut is clean to allow the brake cable to pass through easily. A poor cut will have to be redone, making the housing cable shorter.

    • Add your ferrules to the ends of the brake cable housing liner.

    • Slide the new brake cable into the cable housing liner.

    • The side with a cable head will be slotted into the housing unit, while the side ending in just a cable will go down to the caliper by the wheel from step one.

    • Slot the new cable head into the opening of the old housing unit.

    • Add the screw removed in step 3 back onto the cable and screw it into the end of the housing unit, ensuring that it is oriented in such a way that the cable will not slide out.

    • When taking the cable from the housing unit to the front brake, pass it through the opening at the base of the stem. Pull the cable through to go down through the splitter.

    • This step will ensure that your cable is taut to provide the necessary tension for functioning.

    • Slide the other end of the cable through the splitter.

    • The new cable will go to the right, which is the side that we removed in step one.

    • The new cable will go to the right side of the wheel, and the fixed side of the splitter will go to the left side of the wheel.

    • Pull the cable tight, and secure it by screwing the bolt tight with the cable under the clamp.

    • Cut it with cable cutters so that there is approximately 2" of extra cable length left over.

    • Add a cap to the end of the newly cut brake cable, and secure the cap by clamping it firmly with your pliers.

    • This will prevent the cable from fraying.
