Zire won't turn on
No matter what you do, your PDA won't turn on.
Drained battery
Plug your Zire into the charger. If the green power light in the top left corner of your device doesn't light up, you may have a faulty charge cable or charge port.
If your Zire will not turn on but is displaying a green charge light, your Zire has a battery malfunction that sometimes occurs when the battery reaches low charge. Fully discharge and recharge the battery.
Unplug your Zire and wait 48 hours for the battery to drain. After 48 hours, plug in your PDA and wait 15-20 minutes before turning on.
The battery is faulty
Plug your phone into the charger. If the green power light in the top left corner of your device doesn't light up you may have a faulty charge cable or charge port.
If you can only turn your device on when it is plugged in it's possible your battery has either reached the limit of its charges or is faulty and you need to replace it. Optionally you can utilize a voltmeter to determine if your battery is not functioning. If the battery needs to be replaced, see the installation guide for the battery.
Screen display is black
If your device's screen remains black after charging you may need to replace the LCD screen. If when you turn on the phone, it vibrates or makes noise but the screen is still black, the LCD is most likely broken. To replace the screen, see: Palm Zire 72v1 Screen Replacement.
Zire is unresponsive or frozen
Your Zire just won't respond to any button commands.
Restart Zire/Soft reset
Using the stylus (or similar object such as an unfolded paperclip), press the tip into the small hole located on the right side of the rear panel. You should feel the button depress and the screen should indicate the reset was successful.
If the Zire shuts off again after resetting you may have a drained/bad battery and should see the troubleshooting page for a dead or bad battery.
Hard reset/Factory reset
Warning: A hard reset or factory reset should only be done if you have backed up all data on your Zire. This kind of reset will wipe all data stored on your device and return it to factory defaults, like it is brand new again.
If your device fails a soft reset, and you have backed up or are prepared to wipe all data on your Zire, you can perform a hard reset. While pressing the power button, press the tip of the stylus (or similar object such as an unfolded paperclip) into the small hole located on the right side of the rear panel. You should feel the button depress and the screen should display the Palm logo. When you see the Palm logo, press the up button to confirm the hard reset.
Zire won't charge
Your Zire's battery will not store charge.
USB charge
By connecting your Zire to your computer via USB cable, your computer may be able to trickle charge your device. Note that this charge will take longer than a regular charge.
Connectors could be damaged
The connectors on the charge port of your device may be bent or damaged. This will require repair or replacement of the charge port. The charge port is attached to the motherboard, so you may have to replace the motherboard in order to replace this port. See the installation page for replacing the motherboard of the Zire 72.
Dead battery
Your battery may no longer store charge. Refer to the battery installation guide in order to replace your battery. You may want to check the voltage across your battery with a voltmeter as well.
Front buttons won't work
No matter what you do the front buttons won't work.
You can:
- Clean the buttons with compressed air.
- Do a soft reset; instructions on how to do so are here.
- Do a hard reset; instructions on how to do so are here.
Short cut buttons
If you cannot open the application designated by one of the four shortcut buttons you may have reassigned an application for the button. Reassign the application of your choice to the proper short cut button.
Five-way navigator
The center (select) button has various functions depending on the page you are attempting to navigate. Make sure you are pressing the correct button to perform the desired function.
No sound is coming from the speakers
When trying to play sound on your Zire , there is no sound coming from the speakers.
Dirty headphone plug
The headphone jack may get dirt or lint in it between the connectors and keep the speaker from working. You can try blowing compressed air into the headphone jack. if this doesn't work try disassembling the phone and soaking it in alcohol.
Faulty speakers
If you can't hear anything from your Zire's speakers, the problem may be that you have a bad or old speaker that needs to be replaced.
