Weird Graphics issues and artifacts

My Dell Presision 5530 has been having some weird graphics issues. Here are some of them that happen:

  • The top eighth of the screen will have a strip of random colored pixels that go away when moving the mouse over them.
  • The display flickers black. This is accompanied by the audio stopping for a fraction of a second.
  • Mouse cursor shows twice with the second one frozen
  • The entire display is filled with lines. This only happened twice, and was fixed with a reboot.

The computer is still usable for now, and I usually get at least one of these things happening several times per hour of use.

Here are the things I have tried and did not fix it.

  • Fully deleting and reinstalling both the Nvidia and Intel graphics drivers.
  • Updating windows, bios, and graphics drivers
  • sfc scan and DISM restore

How can I fix this? Is it a hardware problem, or software?

Try moving the screen slowly back and forth to see if you can make the problem happen or if it is happening to make it stop happening.

If nothing happens then try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check what the laptop's display is when seen on it. Don't forget to press the Fn + F8 keys (both together) to toggle the display output from the laptop screen to the external monitor to both screens on together.

If the external monitor display is OK it may be a problem with the video cable between the motherboard and the LCD panel, the video cable connection at either end, motherboard or panel or the panel itself.

Here's the service manual for the laptop. Go to p.37 to view the procedure to remove the display assembly. This will allow you to check the video cable connection on the motherboard and if it appears to be OK you will have to further disassemble to check the panel cable connection or to change the LCD panel.

I don't think it is an issue with the display cable because moving the display does nothing and pressing the keys win+ctrl+shift+b to reset the graphics removes the artifacts currently present. What else could be causing the issue?

If it never happens when using an external monitor, then that only leaves the video cable, cable connector (at either end - motherboard or LCD panel) or the laptop's LCD panel as everything else is common to both the internal and the external display.

I don’t have access to an external monitor right now, but I will next week. If it happens on the external monitor too, do I need a new motherboard?

According to the laptop specifications there are 2 GPUs on the motherboard.

An integrated Intel CPU/GPU and a discrete Nvidia GPU.

If possible use the Nvidia control panel to select the Intel GPU as the primary GPU and then check if it happens.

Normally the Intel GPU is used only on startup until Windows is loaded e.g. if you go into BIOS from startup etc, and after that the Nvidia is the one that is used.

If it happens regardless of which GPU is used and it happens on both internal and external screens then yes it's a motherboard problem
