Spilled Tea Years Ago; Phantom Trackpad

Some years ago I spilled tea on my trackpad, and ever since my trackpad has been essentially non-functional. It will right and left click, dart around the screen, and select large quantities of text all without my input. I can still move the mouse around myself, but I'm in constant battle with the phantom controlling the trackpad (and it usually has enough control that I can't do much).

I've gotten around this by using a mouse and turning on the accessibility function that ignores the trackpad if a mouse is plugged in. To truly fix this issue though, do I need to replace the trackpad or is there some screw I can adjust or some software I can reflash? All these years later I'd like to actually address the real issue now.

Thank you! Any input is helpful.

You’ll need to replace the trackpad and its cable MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2012) Trackpad following this guide Reemplazo del trackpad del MacBook Pro 13" Unibody mediados de 2010

liquid spillage into trackpads tends to kill them, you also likely have corrosion damage as well.

Upon looking at other forums online, I've found people seem to report that the act of physically slapping the trackpad with an open palm sometimes fixes this problem. I tried this, and it seems to fix my issue for about 30 minutes to an hour. Is this a sign of hope, or does it not change much?

The slapping only breaks the seal created from the spill getting between the frame and the trackpad.

You should still open the system up and properly clean the surfaces after taking the trackpad out. More often I find the backside of the trackpad is too badly damaged from the spill.

After taking it out, it visually looks fine. https://i.imgur.com/4YMvY7A.jpg

Any other suggestions, or am I still just avoiding the obvious?

@jsscrlsn You may still try replacing parts one by one, starting from trackpad cable where you have quite a bit of components. With a little luck that may suffice and avoid you replacing trackpad too.

Sadly the tea got into the sandwich of the trackpad so it will need to be replaced.
