Dell Touchpad stopped working

My Dell Latitude E6410’s touch pad stopped working all of the sudden. I decided to go to device manager and uninstall the driver and reinstall it. After I uninstalled it I rebooted my computer and the touch pad still didn’t work (Obviously) so I went to device manager to have windows reinstall the driver and it didn’t show up in device manager. Then I went to dell and got the touch pad driver and it says failed every time i go to install it. The dell touch pad app doesn’t even detect it. Any help is appreciated!

Thank You!

Solución Elegida

This is going to sound really foolish, but I turned the computer on today and the touchpad just mysteriously started working again. I’m guessing Windows found a driver for it but nonetheless thank you all for helping me!

I'm having the same problem. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Probably best off bying a new mouse. Anyhow you should probably not mark this issue as solved seeing as how there's no real solution to the problem. Cheers!

On most laptops there is a function key which is one of the f keys to toggle trackpad on and off.

Try pressing that button while holding fn and see if it makes the trackpad work again.

Hi @benjamen50 ,

Wouldn't it still appear in Device Manager though?

@benjamen50 For some reason this laptop doesn't have that..

Hi @imjimjim21 ,

Start the laptop and get into the BIOS menu area (press F2 after laptop starts and before Windows boots) and using the keyboard to navigate - arrow keys etc, check in the POST Behaviour section that the option Touchpad-PS/2 is selected.

If it is, then here’s a link to the service manual for the laptop. Find the section that describes how to replace the Palmrest to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the Palmrest so that you can check the touchpad cable connection. The touchpad is part of the palmrest.

Replacement touchpads are available online. Just search for Dell Latitude E6410 touchpad part, to get results for suppliers.

@jayeff It just stopped all of the sudden it would really suck if the track pad broke :(

Check the battery to see if it is swelling. A swollen battery can press against the track pad and cause it to fail. The battery should be flat but can swell up if it gets too much heat or overcharged.

@lightnwire This laptop has an external battery so thats not the case

I get this occasionally , I have found that the following has solved this three times for me. Don't ask me why it has worked, it just works. Turn off laptop. Remove battery. Now press power button and keep it pressed for about 30 seconds. Now replace battery and plug in mains. Turn on computer, you should have your touchpad back working again.

I know its an old thread but I still even in 2022 use my Dell e6410 everyday.
