Cannot reboot from cd

My Lenovo G-50-45 has Windows 8-1 OS. I want to wipe my hard drive using a Wipe Drive CD and then reinstall OS using CDs but there is no choice in BIOS to reboot with a CD / DVD. Also I could not find a way to add the CD/DVD choice. How do I remedy this problem?

After trying many options I finally got it to boot from cd. At this point I'm not even sure how.

There must be a way - but none of the proposed methods here work. I have a new 330 Lenovo laptop that won’t even recognize the CD/DVD drive.

I can boot from CD/DVD and USB drive after change BIOS on a Lenovo Desktop bought in 2020 after I changed the "SECURE BOOT" from default (ENABLED) to DISABLED.

Hi @louisianagal ,

You need to change the mode from UEFI to Legacy mode so thatyou can boot from a USB or DVD.This is from the User Guide:

How can I start the BIOS setup utility?

To start the BIOS setup utility:

1 Shut down the computer.

2 Press the Novo button and then select BIOS Setup.

How can I change the boot mode?

There are two boot modes: UEFI and Legacy Support. To change the boot mode, start the BIOS setup utility and set boot mode to UEFI or Legacy

Support on the boot menu.

When do I need to change the boot mode?

The default boot mode for your computer is UEFI mode. If you need to install a legacy operating system, such as Windows, Linux or Dos, etc (that is, any operating system before Windows 8) on your computer, you must change the boot mode to Legacy Support. The legacy operating system, such as Windows, Linux or Dos, etc cannot be installed if you don't change the boot mode

Once you have installed Win 8.1 or 10 you can go back and enable UEFI mode again.

New laptops with UEFI bios may make it hard to find specific boot up options like "cd/dvd drive." Those options are usually present on computers with legacy bios options enabled.

On UEFI machines, the boot up options are usually available by hitting the quick boot menu, which is a different key than the bios prompt.

When you start your laptop, hit F12. That should bring you to the quick boot menu. There, you will see a list of boot up options. The CD/DVD drive option should be there as well as USB.

Good luck!

Hi @ Nick K,

Since you can’t get into BIOS by pressing the Novo key and then BIOS setup option, have you tried accessing BIOS via Windows and then altering the BIOS from UEFI to Legacy to boot from a CD (or USB)?
