Background
The Sonos Roam 2 is a small, portable speaker designed to work just as well on the go as it does at home. Like its predecessor, it supports both Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi, making it a hybrid speaker that fits into the larger Sonos ecosystem. It’s waterproof and dustproof, has built-in voice assistant support (Sonos Voice Control and Alexa), and includes features like automatic Trueplay tuning and Sound Swap to easily move music between speakers. New in this model is a dedicated Bluetooth button, so you can pair and play right out of the box without needing the Sonos app.
Sonos released the Roam 2 in May 2024, with a launch price of $179 USD. It’s available worldwide and targeted at users who want something ultra-portable but still part of a full multi-room setup. It replaces the original Sonos Roam from 2021, which had a similar design but some usability quirks, like requiring Wi-Fi setup before using Bluetooth. The Roam 2 fixes that and also addresses some past issues with overheating and battery problems.
While Sonos hasn’t shared sales numbers, the Roam line is one of their more popular portable products. That said, some users—especially with the original Roam—have reported battery issues, like units dying after being left on wireless chargers too long. Sonos says the Roam 2 has improved charging and heat management, but long-term reliability is still something users are watching closely.
Overall, the Roam 2 is a solid refresh. It keeps the compact form factor and sound quality people liked, while making it easier to use and hopefully more reliable. There’s no official replacement or next-gen model yet, so for now, this is Sonos’s main portable speaker.
Identification
You can identify the Sonos Roam 2 by checking the model number S44, which is printed on the bottom of the speaker near the rubber foot. The Roam 2 closely resembles the original Sonos Roam (model S27), but there are a few key differences to help tell them apart. Most noticeably, the Roam 2 has a Bluetooth pairing button located on the back of the device, just above the USB-C charging port—something the original Roam lacks. The Sonos logo on the front is also slightly raised on the Roam 2, compared to the flat-printed logo on the original.
The Roam 2 is available in several colors, including black, white, and other seasonal or limited edition finishes. It has a triangular prism shape with soft edges, physical media controls on one end, and a durable rubber base on the other. If you're unsure whether you have a Roam or Roam 2, the easiest way to tell is by looking for the Bluetooth button and confirming the model number. Verifying the model ensures you're using the correct repair guide and compatible replacement parts.
