it almost sounds like an electrical spark discharge, but the engine seems to be running without hesitation.
My other thought would be the piston hitting a valve - that would be rather serious.
I can't think of anything else to cause that noise.

Can you describe the noise? Is it a knock, tick, rattle, or grinding sound, and does it happen at idle, under load, or all the time? That will help narrow it down.
