error code -50 on added second HDD

So I just received my upgrade kit today and installed a second 500 gig 5400 rpm HDD I was using in an external USB case. I formatted the drive yesterday and installed it today. If I try and write to the drive I get "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." Under the disc "Get info" permissions are Read & Write for the admin, Read & Write for staff and Read only for everyone. In Disc Utility I can verify and repair the disc but I cannot erase or partition it. It says that it cannot unmount the disc. Any one else have this problem or have a suggestion? Any help is appreciated in advance.

Please give us the model and make of the hard drive.

Western Digital WD500bevt I should also mention that it shows up on the desktop so it's not hidden or anything like that, I simply can't write to it.

So I pulled the drive out and hooked it up to my wife's macbook via usb and it worked fine. I reformatted it and gave it a different name but still have the same "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." message.

So I have since tried another hard drive, seagate 320 gig 5400 rpm and it has the same problem. I tried formatting the 500 gig in a ps3 so OSX would need to force initialize it and that did not work. Is it possible that the cable I was sold was no good? Both drives work fine and have no issues when attached to my seagate thunderbolt adapter, it is only when they are hooked up internally.

Thanks, I just tried it out but since I last repartitioned my HDD and put it back in, it bounces back any file I try and put in it and in disc utility if I try to erase I get 2 error messages, the first is "Disk Erase failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed." The second is "Max OS X can't repair the disk "HDD2. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."

Under first aid it still verifies and repairs "OK".

To work around this error you'll want to go into System Preferences->Energy Saver and for both Battery and Power Adapter tick the box next to "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" on your computer. Yes that means the OS will put all of your drives to sleep when it can but that's the only way I've found to fix the problem.

What seems to happen is that some external drives have firmware which detects inactivity and spins the drives down. If OSX is not configured with the energy saver setting mentioned above then OSX is not expecting the drives to go to sleep. When accessing the drive after it puts itself to sleep obviously something gets messed up and the error -50 is thrown among other problems.

By configuring the OS to put disks to sleep the OS will issue spin-up commands.

This should give you a way to work around the error code, let me know the results and if I can help any further :)

Was already in "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" mode.

Both the from disk and the "to" disk are working fine.

The "to disk is a MacBook Pro in Target disk mode.

WHAT? I'm just using my ZTE pro cellphone! I've never heard of the things you mentioned. I'm devastated! I'm just an old lady keeping in touch with my grand & great-grand children! Am I just cut off forever? My tears burn my eyes. Is this going to last forever? Can you reach me? How will I know if you have any help for me?

Try this: configuring System Preferences->Energy Saver for Power Adapter to "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible". Now see if the problem still happens.
