Microphone not working after changing the battery

Hello Community !

Everything is in the title, my internal mic do not work after I changed the battery.

I tested everything except, of course, the microphone, which I forgot, before closing back the Surface.

Of course, I am afraid that I broke the mic but what seems strange, hence my question, is that Windows does not detect anything suspicious about it.

Is it possible that I broke my mic but Windows still detect it as functioning as ever ?

In fact, the device manager shows it, nothing wrong, but when I speak, no sound.

I could actually live without it and use, when needed, an external headset but maybe you people have a trick for fixing it.

Thanks in advance,

Stefanovic

I am afraid I did...

Can you confirm me that the mic, is on the right of the below image

and that the flex cable on the left of the image ("?") is related to the microphone ?

Es esta una buena pregunta?

Hi @stefanovic

Just checking that the internal microphone is selected as the default recording device in Settings > System > Sound > Sound control panel >Recording?

Hi @jayeff

Thanks for replying !

It is by default. The name is "microphone network (Realtek)", I guess it is the internal microphone.

Hi @stefanovic

You may have accidentally damaged the microphone.

Here's an image taken from Step.31 of the ifixit Reemplazo de batería Microsoft Surface Pro 4 guide showing the location of the microphone.

Part of the battery removal procedure is to remove the EMI shield and to disconnect the cameras. You may have accidentally damaged the microphone in the process.

The fact that Device Manager can still detect the microphone OK just means that it can communicate OK with the IC controller that the microphone is connected to and not that it is communicating with the microphone itself. The mic would convert the sound waves into electrical impulses that would be received by the controller.

Hi @stefanovic,

The mic is on the right (see location as shown on p.1 of the user guide

It connects directly to an IC on a board to the right. I think that is the mic controller

The board that the controller is on connects to the board below.

As to what that board connects to I can't see.

if I'm right and it is the controller then up to that point everything is OK. It may be the mic itself.

Hi @jayeff,

Thank you for these clarifications.

In fact, looking in the user guide, the component to the right is the front microphone and the component to the left seems to be the back microphone !

And I had a little bit of trouble with the last one when I reassembled the Surface.

You are right, I probably damaged it.

Since it looks quite hard to change them, I think I will live with it.

Thank you for your time and help ! :-)

Hi.

I don't know if this is the right explanation, but the tutorial has a gap during disassembly in step 32 (I commented on this in the tutorial) which could perhaps explain the problem.

The tutorial doesn't mention the little ribbon cable you mentioned with your ("?"). So you don't realise it when you dismantle the motherboard and then when you lift it up, the cable disconnects by itself despite the lock. And when you reassemble it, it remains underneath the motherboard. Fortunately, I realised this after reassembling the tablet several times. I don't know if it's used to connect the microphone?
