What can cause a broken keyboard and trackpad?

Hi,

I was just wondering if a completely non functional keyboard and trackpad would be fixed by replacing the top case? What else could cause this issue?

I know there is not much information, but what would your suggestions be?

Thanks, Philip.

The keyboard and touchpad use independent connections to the logic board as you can see in Steps 15 ~ 18 in this guide Reemplazo de tarjeta lógica de MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2018

So either you has a liquid spill around the area or the connectors are not properly mated. If neither of this are the case it’s likely a problem with the internal USB hub both of these connect to within the main logic board. I would open the hardware report to check the USB connections are showing and you may need to take the logic board to look on the other side for damage.

would plugging something into the usb c ports and see if it is detected prove this theory? the keyboard and trackpad were temperamental for a while and then stopped working completely. it has never had any sort of liquid damage.

@philhasbread - The internal hub is different than the external hub logic.

Replacing the top case could resolve the keyboard issue, but it's unlikely to resolve the trackpad issue as the trackpad does not directly connect to the top case assembly. It sounds like there's a chance the keyboard and trackpad may have experienced some sort of damage, in which case there could be damage on the main logic board as well. I would recommend inspecting the condition of the main logic board for other signs of damage. If the logic board is in good condition, then replacing the top case will likely fix the keyboard issue, and replacing the trackpad would likely fix the trackpad issue.

@zpl - given the fact both are dead points to something within the logic board.

@danj Good point, that seems likely!
