Why do my USB ports constantly connect/disconnect when on AC power?

This is a two-part question. Both parts are directly related.

1.) When my device is charging (AC Adapter plugged in), my USB ports don’t function properly. Devices with a large current draw (I.E. my iPhone) constantly connect & then disconnect. Low-power devices (I.E. usb mouse, flash drives) function fine.

2.) When I unplug my device from AC power, the USB ports function fine with all devices, but my screen flickers.

I’ve eliminated the possibility of this being a software bug, it happens even in BIOS settings & on multiple OS’s.

I have a feeling this is something to do with a ground issue, or a power circuit, but I don’t even know where to start when it comes to those things without proper information. Which is why I’m here.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @did2010 ,

If Win 10 installed, create a Win 10 battery report to check the status of the battery. Compare the Design capacity value versus the Full Charge capacity. If the battery is failing it may be that the charger has problems supplying enough power to run the laptop and charge the battery at the same time. The same when the laptop is on the battery. Power fluctuations from the battery may cause the screen to flicker

Did you try a different compatible charger, you didn’t say? This is just to eliminate the possibility that there may be two separate unrelated problems i.e. USB power/connection problem with charger connected and flickering screen without it.

What is the motherboard’s board number (printed on the motherboard somewhere)? Search online for (insert board number) schematics to hopefully find them. Maybe try here. This will make it easier to start testing the power supply rails on the motherboard.

Just some things that I’d try.
