Erased Mac OS and Not can’t get it back

I recently erased my Mac OS HD drive under Toshiba drop down in Disk Recovery mode. I’m not connected to the internet and am trying to reinstall Mac OS. When I go through regular start up I get a circle with a slash through it. I was attempting to wipe my computer clean to start over as I’m giving it to my girlfriend. When I try to reinstall Mac OS Sierra it says “to download and restore MacOS, your computers eligibility will be verified with Apple” — I hit continue and nothing happens.

Can I download MacOS without internet? If not, how do I get Internet to it when I can’t get it to start up not in recovery mode?

Any help appreciated.

Are you re-installing MacOS Sierra through internet recovery or through a flash drive that has the MacOS installation media on it?

Internet Recovery requires internet as the name says. Command + R is for internet recovery, will prompt for Wi-Fi network.

Make sure date and time is set correctly if it says installation is damaged (You can use terminal to type in ntpdate -u time.apple.com or date -u 0711053819

The laptop wasn’t connected to the WiFi and I do Not have the Mac OS software on a flash drive or disc. Can I plug an Ethernet into the laptop and that provide internet to the laptop? I was hoping the computer would already have Sierra on it that I could re-download from.

I haven't done it via ethernet before only through wifi for internet recovery.

Making installation media for MacOS requires a MacBook with a working MacOS otherwise a virtual machine on windows via VMware or VirtualBox that's running MacOS which takes some time to set up.

@benjamen50 - Either via WiFi or Ethernet which is connected to the internet will work with Internet Recovery.

Ethernet is a bit easier as you don't need to worry about connecting to the WiFi AP and if you have a WPA password.

Once you get to the installer screen you can exit out and then run Disk Utility to prep up an external drive and even install the OS to it as well. Then you can go to the App Store and download the OS installer or in newer versions of the EFI you can do that within Internet Recovery as well.
