How can I install the operating system on MBP mid 2009?

Hi everyone,

I have a MBP mid 2009. It was running sluggish. I pulled the hard drive out and formatted it in Windows. Since I did that, I am not able to install any kind of operating system on it. I don’t even have recovery and internet recovery isn’t available on my model.

What can I do to fix this? I have spent 4 days trying to figure it out. Tons of online reading. I have tried creating bootable USB’s with Mojave, Leopard, High Sierra, and El Capitan.

I’m a windows person and I have no idea how to get out of this mess. Any help is welcome.

You’ll need to download a copy of the El Capitan to install it. Find a friend with a Mac to help you. as you’ll need to use his system to setup an installer thumb drive following this guide: How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive

Can you update Lion once it's installed?

By Linux, do you mean something like Ubuntu?

The end of the road is Lion for this system. See for your self in the link I posted.

Yes, Ubuntu would be much better!

Thanks. If it helps, I looked up the serial number on the bottom of the mac and it is this model:

Well! Thats not the system you had picked. While it's a newer system its limited to OS-X 10.11.x El Capitan as the last supported OS

@danj I tried to install High Sierra on this model with the Dosdude patch, without many hopes and just for fun..surprisingly everything seems to work fine and, despite 4Gb RAM only, runs pretty well. Honestly I didn't expect that.

I’m curious, why did you use Windows to reformat a Mac drive?

Target disk mode to reformat this in a Mac, then as long as you find the correct OS, or Linux distro, you can reinstall an OS. Good luck.

Thanks. It's just what I'm used to. I've always used Windows. This was given to me and I wanted to learn how to use a Mac OS.
