One USB-C Port Not Working - Repair Process Question?

The front right USB-C port on my MacBook Pro with Touch Bar 13” (2018) doesn’t work. Never has. It doesn’t charge, it doesn’t recognize devices, etc.

What would a repair of this one USB-C (Thunderbolt, etc.) port likely entail? Will the entire logic board or will they just be able to replace a single small part in the store?

I’m NOT eager to have to mail this off and/or have major guts from a brand new Mac replaced. Maybe it’s just a loose connection or something, or maybe it’s a bad port. Either way, I’m curious what folks here think.

I looked at the tear-down, but couldn’t tell much. Any help here is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The 2018 teardown does gloss over some of the details as Apple is basing the updated system on the older 2016 model. So if you look at the 2016 teardown you’ll see the USB-C port assembly is removable!

So, yes you can replace either one as needed. But there is still a wrinkle here!

What if the connector is not the issue but the logic on the logic board which would require a new logic board. While not obvious each pair of ports has its own Intel JHL6540 Thunderbolt 3 controller.

As this is still under warranty I would strongly recommend you get it to Apple or one of their authorized service centers. But, before you do I would make a good backup of my stuff and if you have anything personal on your system wipe the drive down so if they change out the logic board nothing personal would be exposed.

The other USB-C on the right side works, so I’m hopeful that's a good sign.

Former Mac Genius here (should have known to look at the 2016 tear-down), so I know the drill re: these types of repairs. At least they do more of them in-store now than when I was working a decade+ ago where nearly every laptop went to Depot. I filed a case within three weeks of getting it, and then re-confirmed that it still doesn’t work under Mojave. My schedule is lighter in a week so I’ll take it to a store then (the nearest is 90 minutes away). It’s plenty well documented, anyway.

What’s odd is that when I plug my Bose QuietComforts in to charge them, they give a blinking red light indicating “error.” For any other peripheral, nothing happens at all - no errors, no popups, nada. Not even on the iPhone which, as we all know, sometimes will give a warning about a non-standard device or something.

Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics doesn’t indicate any problem.

Does the controller to each usb-c port live on that removable pair of ports or on the logic board itself? Thanks

No, the logic is on the main logic board, the connect is all thats on the removable part.

Too late for this case, but for anybody else having this issue: resetting the SMC (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295) brought my MBP’s “dead” USB-C port back to life.

Hello,

I have an issue with mu MBP TouchBar 2018 13”. I was using an Anker USB hub for connect a HDMI screen. I use that adapter only when leave the office for meeting or connect to my screen at home. Worked so well, but las weekend, I tried to connect it to a TV and the screen of the TV was with “pollution”. I got back to my home and tested with my screen that always worked well and I had the same problem. I tested with the hub that I have in my office (Adam) and worked well. The next day I noticed that the Mac was connected and charging, but the battery percentage was going down, and if I remove the charger from the USB port, was still on connected and charging. I did several times the different type of reseting on startup and now I only can power the Mac from one USB-C ports at a very limited speed (15 hours to finish the battery charge). If a disconnect it, is very difficult to get it to charge again. Tested with different cables and charges, and is the same. Now I just tested connecting a USB flash drive and I can see them and use them. Looks like is only the charging.

Really I don’t know what to do, my warranty just finished like 1 and a half month ago. And in Chile we only have authorized distributors, their service is not professional. If some one know what to do, please let me know.

Does your power has good earth ground connection ?

I have a port (right front) that charges, but devices only work when plugged in one direction. Flip them over, and they don’t work.

More likely a cheap cable. There are quite a few different USB-C cables besides the cheapo's. You need to keep an eye on what the seller is selling. Some are not rated for power (missing the wires) only data. Others are rated for power but not to charge your system as the wire gage used is only adequate to charge a phone or supply a peripheral power. The last version is a cable designed to charge your system often they are missing some of the data lies to make room for the thicker power lines.

So is USB-C so great? Not in my mind! A great idea that failed at the basics, as I can't tell the three different cables as I've just outlined as there is not standard marking approach! Give me a symbol molded into the connector. The Standards group is focused on creating more confusion! Don't mess with the terms as that doesn't help the user.

The best you can do is get a set of real Apple USB-C power cables directly from Apple and use them for charging (White cables). Get a different color cable for the USB-C peripherals (Yellow cables) and if you really need a data only cable get Red cables.

Then lets throw in the cheap cables often times they are not fully wired so only one side is wired, which is your problem here.

You still have another problem! Your USB-C port is damaged as well! This can happen when the cable is not properly wired so the load is not taking advantage of the second mate pin on the other side so the socket breaks down (over heating damaging it).

I'm not sure the whole rant was called for @danj , but it's worth noting that Apple replaced the ports at no charge and that corrected the issue. It was, in fact, a port malfunction.

So far I've replaced over a dozen port assemblies, a few burnt logic boards (TB ports damaged) and lots of bad USB power cables on the newer MacBook & MacBook Pro's. Haven't needed to do that many USB-A ports.

Happy you're working in any case! You're lucky Apple didn't hit you with the cost.

The issue is back. Devices plugged in the front-right port only work in one direction. Move them to any other port and they work in both directions. I'm going to have Apple weigh in on this again. Same problem I had 10 months ago.

My MacBook Pro 13” at one point had one front left port stop working completely. It would not give power nor allow charging. The other port on the same side will provide power though but not work for charging.

On a work trip to our office in Ontario, CA, took the machine to the local Genius bar in Victoria Gardens. Got tested and the genius bar guy reported that the USB left board was not working appropriately. The machine also showed the same symptom of “thinking” it was constantly connected to power even when running on batteries (not ideal).

I was getting prepared to take the machine to our local authorized repair shop in Montevideo, Uruguay knowing it was going to be a 15 days adventure since dropping the laptop there.

After arriving to MVD there was a new Mac OS update which I applied, and after reboot all ports work again. Go figure.

By the way, I did do SMC and NVRAM resets, multiple times. The genius boy tried all of that and other things to no avail.

Not sure what to do now. I have no tried plugging power to this port, who knows, maybe the wattage will bring the port card to a bad state again. Not sure if take to repair shop anyway. Have not made my mind yet, but I thought worth sharing this story as I find the whole thing perplexing.

I had exactly the same symptoms you have, at least at the beginning. After it switched from a “single port not working” to “all of them not working”. SMC resets worked at the beginning then no more.

Yes, it means that I cannot charge the laptop nor use it plugged to power. It happened when I was in Thailand for a long trip. I phoned to support, they couldn't do anything. I had to buy another laptop (another brand) in emergency.

I am now to selling my MacBook Pro 15'' 2019. I am no more confident with that machine.

Hello,

After charging my mac with an anker cable. My macbook pro 13 touch 2017´s Usb c ports are not Recognising any drive i connect, but when i plug in the charger it charges. Only one port is recognising the drive and external monitor but after a few seconds the macbook will restart with an error message. I did do SMC and NVRAM resets, i even factory reset it But no changes. Can anyone help me please. Before i bring it to an specialist. Thanks in advance
