Red Flash on boot

I have an iPad Pro from a customer who stated that the iPad would not power up. All original, never opened. Customer stated that she put the iPad on charge one night, and the next morning, the screen was black. She did not have access to iTunes. She also said that the iPad was NOT dropped and not wet. I took the iPad, connected to iTunes, which recognized device in restore mode. Attempted to restore. Toward end of process, Apple Logo comes on the screen for 8-10 seconds, follow by a quick full-red screen flash, then to black screen, with iTunes error 4013. IPad is out of warranty. I’m pretty experienced with replacing screens, batteries, cables, ports, etc., but troubleshooting what seems to be a software issue has be scratching my head. Has anyone experienced this?

Is it a WiFi only model or cellular model?

Did the owner notice anything failing before the device got bricked? Such as front cam failure? Random bootlooping? Freezing?

Otherwise, possible suspects that are not the board would be ambient light sensors and possibly front cam.

At board level, many component can cause this and history can help narrow it down. From Tristar to cellular circuit (if it is cellular) to NAND.

She noticed nothing. She was watching Hulu. Closed the app, locked the iPad, put it on charger, and went to bed. The next morning, the screen was black and she couldn’t even get an Apple Logo. I was able to get the logo like it was booting, but the screen flashes red for a microsecond, then to “on” black, so not completely dead. I can unplug from iTunes and reconnect, and the iPad is recognized in recovery mode, and the process repeats... I would suspect power cable or a ribbon not being properly seated, BUT the iPad has never been opened.

I am having the SAME issue. July 18, 2018. The iPad Pro 10.5 was hot upon opening the protective case, would not take a charge, and now will not reset: The Apple logo comes on for a couple of seconds then a red flash then blank screen for a few seconds then it repeats . It is WiFi only . HELP!

Waiting for someone to try getting the tristar replaced on this because that's what I would get replaced first.

Fixed an iPhone 5s once with the exact same issue.

Learell Faulk I would force it into DFU mode and restore. If it still fails, or fails again soon after, I would move to board level diagnosis. Probably test NAND supplies and off all ok, replace Tristar.

This had happened with my iPad pro 10.5 after having it for 1.5 years . The sound had been cutting out intermittently when using the wired jack  for about 2 weeks prior ,I initially thought it was due to the headphones  themselves but  after aboit a week the iPad would randomly freeze and be stuck on  grey Apple screen  if it was  allowed to time out into sleep mode , it would only turn on again  up if hard reset . This happened a few times until I contacted apple support which advised me to do a factory reset.. that was what ultimately killed the machine . Everytime it tried to install the OS from iTunes from any computer using different cords it would flash  red for a couple seconds then fail and  error code. . Genius bar couldn't help me as it is out of warranty . I used the iFixit repair guide to open the screen and immediately saw the problem. A piece of the earphone jack.had dislodged and a tiny screw was free inside . Im not sure how that happened in the first place but as soon as I put the screw back into place and  closed everything  back up the iPad booted as factory reset and I was able to restore data  from last backup. the iPad works perfectly now . No sound issues ..not a software problem .it was a hardware problem at least for my case.

In my experience the red flash is usually a nand issue. I have resolved it by pulling the nand from the board and formatting it and then doing a DFU restore. I just received a new lot of A1701/A1709 10.5’s and I’ve come come across one that is still wrapped in the plastic, perfect condition, and it shows the red flash before the screen turns black. The first attempt to restore the device saw the progress bar get near to the end of the restore before failing and rebooting into recovery but now every subsequent attempt results in the red flash before it even gets to the part where the progress bar appears. I was hoping I wasnt going to have to remove the plastic from this one but it looks like I’m going to have to crack this thing open. I’ll update once again to advise if a simple nand replacement/wipe did the job!

Hi I have been having a similar issue with my iPad Pro 10.5 that also has a slight curve to the frame. I took it to the genius bar and they told me that they could only sell me a replacement for $400+. I saw videos showing a NAND removal and resoldering and also noticed that the iPad would sometimes boot up if I applied a bit of pressure to the case (slight twisting motion… don’t ask). I opened it and noticed that if I apply pressure to the strip covering the logic board while starting the unit, it boots up just fine… weird. It shuts right off if I remove pressure from the logic board enclosure… any ideas?

Did you find any solution to this issue? My iPad is doing the same thing. If I apply pressure it will boot up but then turns off again once released.

Hey guys, i know its a bit late but i figure i might as well leave as much feedback as i can. I had a similar issue with my iPad but in a different way. First there was a shorted cap around the PMIC, so i removed that, the device worked fine. Then i assembled the device and it would go directly into recovery mode. After that i tried testing everything i could even reflashing to no avail. Long story short, i unplugged all the peripherals from the iPad and only left the screen and battery plugged in, i plugged it into a windows machine, and instantly booted into the main menu of the device.

TL;DR unplug everything from the iPad (from the inside) except for charging port, battery and screen (top cameras and flexes and everything else you see even the antenna wires) then try to boot device using lightening cable and see if it turns on. If it does then one step at a time try to replug everything in until you find the causing factor and proceed accordingly. Best of luck!

Same issue: slow flashing of Apple logo, one quick flash of red screen, then black (repeat nonstop). Happened after a security update failed and now battery is completely dead. Local ARS doesn’t have the battery in stock.

I am having the same problem. I've had a lot of use out of my pad. I have to say although I have loved the power of this pad over the years the build quality is not what it once was from apple. tell me anyone who doesn't have a slight bend in there's after some years. I bet that eventually causes problems. then of course its buy a new one or figure it out for yourself. defiantly my last Apple after being there from the start.
