After a screen replacement, why am I only getting picture sometimes?

I recently received an iPhone 6s screen replacement kit as a gift. I followed a YouTube tutorial. Some screws were lost along the way (a few from the motherboard plate, the two screws on either side of the charger port, and a few that hold the metal plate) but I've ordered more to replace them. I also ended up scratching the metal plate with a razor trying to remove some tough screws. When connecting the new screen to my phone, I mistakenly tried attaching the wrong ribbon cable for quite a few minutes. After realizing my mistake I looked closely at each prong but nothing was bent out of place. I got everything back into place and turned the phone on. It worked, but only for a little. I pressed the lock button so that I could tell the time, but my screen stayed black. However, my phone was still on because I could hear myself getting a phone call. Minutes later, it worked again. And then it didn't, again. I disconnected my battery for about 45 seconds and turned my phone on again. It was on, but black. Moments later my screen worked again and now I'm typing this on the phone. I'm sure I did a lot wrong but my local prices to replace a screen are about as much as replacing a whole iPhone 6s. Help!!!

Sorry for your troubles, Did you recorrect the placement of the flex cables? Are you sure you put the correct screws in the corresponding places? For that phone you're working with 3-4 different screw lengths. If you place one in the wrong area and forcefully screwed it down you could have damaged the phone, so lets hope that did not happen.

Review the guide and maybe review what you did and correct it. It could be that the cable is not placed well/correctly or your metal place is not seated properly over the flex cables of the LCD. Also, please be cautious when opening the unit as the cables are quiet sensitive and are prone to being ripped off.

Let me ask: if I DID put the screws in the wrong places... is my phone irreversibly damaged? I planned to go to a repair shop pretty out of the way tomorrow but if I can't fix it I guess I'll have to get another...

Depends on the puncture poin/pressure. If you did screw it past where it wanted to stop then you're stabbing the components underneath it. Just carefully removed them and put them in the correct place.

So you connected the screen without disconnecting the battery cable when you realized that you needed to reorder the screen cables, right? This is classic iPhone 6s backlight or image filter damage from connecting a screen while the battery is connected. Definitely repairable, but not DIY. Find a microsolderer to fix the backlight circuit on the board.

Also--if your local folks are charging close to $350--the value of replacing an iPhone 6s---then you need to shop around sister!
