As I wrote above I had the same problem. It was stuck somehow before booting (the only thing that showed signs of life was the power on led and the fan). No image on either HDMI, laptop display or VGA port. It wasn't going into BIOS either. Not even the caps lock/num lock led would change state when pressing the keys. The solution for me was to tear it all down and put it back together. Although this is not the first time this happens to me, so it might be an isolated problem. I also replaced the heat conductive paste under the cpu and gpu heatsinks. I know it's not a real answer but it's very difficult to pinpoint the problem without access to the computer, and this is what solved mine.

It sounds like the computer is able to boot but not display. Try connecting to an external monitor, if you don't have one then see if you can borrow one for a few minutes. If the external monitor shows your desktop then the problem is with the laptop display; shine a flashlight at an angle on the laptop screen to see if you can see icons on the desktop, this would be a faulty back light.
If the external monitor does not display then the problem is with the graphics adapter on the system board.

I have the same behavior. I tried finding the motherboard schematic, but I couldn't find any free version of it.

You say the hard disk spins, but does it appear to boot, i.e. the hard disk light flashes randomly as it loads the operating system?
