Replaced broken iPhone 4S screen+ buttons & now device wont turn on

14 months ago i dropped my iPhone 4S breaking the screen, home button and on/off button. I finally got around to replacing all the broken parts yesterday. I plugged the phone in to charge and the red battery sign appeared. I left the phone plugged in for a couple of hours and when i returned it was in the same state and would not power up. I have tried reseting the phone but still no power up. I have plugged the phone into my pc and itunes does not recognise the device. Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem? Could it be the battery is now faulty as the phone has not been switched on in so long? Or could it be something i may have done wrong or forgotten to resemble while replacing the screen and buttons?... Both buttons and screen now seem to be working ok though. Or is there likely to be a more serious hardware issue?

Any help/tips/advice would be much appreciated

I agree with Michael that you most probably have a battery gone bad due to 14 months of inactivity. A swollen battery is also a sure indication that it needs replacement.

You may also want to rule out dirty or improperly seated connectors, and prying damage.

To do that, first disconnect and examine the battery connector. Look for anything broken or missing on it and on the board around it; clean (use a cotton swab and 90%+ isopropyl alcohol) then re-seat the battery connector. Do the same for the charging dock: look for anything stuck inside where the charging cable attaches, and look for broken and/or corroded pins (also clean those with IPA, they may have accumulated dirt over 14 months). Then examine the charging dock and around where it connects to the board. Clean it also. Try to reseat that connector and test the phone.

cheers guys! ive took the battery out and checked/cleaned the connections. the ground clip is also in place as it should be. i also had a look at the logic board which looks ok. ive just ordered a replacement battery so i will see if that sorts it.

is there any other ground clips etc i should be checking as i had everything out in order to replace the buttons.

also, is there any way of powering the iphone up when the battery is dead? or will the iphone not power up even if its plug into a mains source?

Unfortunately I do not believe you can power on without the battery

I'd wait for the new battery.

It is possibly because you have not powered it up in a while, personally i would inspect the logic board and if everything looks okay try and replace the battery they are quite cheap. The only other thing is to check that all the grounding clips are in place, if not it could prove to cause such a problem
