What is the maximum amount of RAM?

According to Apple, the maximum amount of RAM for a late-2008 13" unibody Macbook 2.4Gz machine when it was released was 4GB. However, I have seen numerous articles (e.g. http://blog.macsales.com/9102-secret-fir...) suggesting that a firmware update in 2012 allowed this machine to use 8GB of RAM. Has anyone tested this? If I do upgrade to 8GB of RAM and these articles are incorrect, do I risk damaging my machine?

Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Originally, this model was only unofficially capable of stably supporting 6 GB of RAM, but as confirmed by OWC, it is capable of supporting 8 GB of RAM if updated to Boot ROM Version MB51.007D.B03 and running MacOS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or higher.

Hi, I have actually tried 8GB. Got the infamous beeps. I tested the two rams separately in the slots. Eventually, I am using the original 1GB + one 4GB. I called crucial who said they could not do anything as 4 GB is the official supported capacity. I run the dosdude 's fixed MOJAVE. Any ideas, Mayer?

Boot it up from a Sierra OS X and see if it works.
