In the United States the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 is a Federal Law that states that stickers and clauses are illegal. It says you can open your electronics without voiding the warranty, regardless of what language of that warranty says.

    Dustin D'Amour - Contestar

    Stickers are illegal!?

    Brandon -

For anyone concerned, if you apply heat with a blow dryer or heat gun you can carefully remove the sticker without damaging it, making it impossible to know that the sticker was ever removed.

All the immature comments aside, thank you Dustin for sharing the information.

Here is What's Stated in Step-3 : (There is a small plastic tab that reinforces the front corner of the Xbox.) Actually, the "Tab" is NOT SMALL at all. See the Picture: The "TAB" is the Piece that this Person has their Thumb on, is the Tab that you NEED TO SLIDE TOWARDS THE "REAR" of the Unit. You will be able to tell How this Large Tab Holds the Top and the Bottom Case Covers together. Take Note how to Replace this tab back where it Belongs, when you are putting the Case Covers back together. Hope that this comment will help you. 6-29-2017

prying does not work. my spudger is causing damage. my soft. plastic. spudger. and the %#*@ thing does not move. this is a common issue with the instructions on this site. you write instructions like you assume people have extensive repair experience. describe the plastic tab. add detail. because simply prying WILL damage the case. hire a %#*@ writer. cause you guys do not know how to precisely convey important detail. constant problem with tech companies actually. no writers.

I had to use a 1/32nd flathead screw driver. In the corner to get it started push the top joint of the case down and up will simultaneously pulling up and down to seperate the seam. You will need a 3rd hand to insert the 1/32nd flathead and pry up to get the case started.

I had a virgin never opened xbox day one og so that might be why I had to do it this way.

    Ethan Banks - Contestar

It’s easier if you push the top empty area part of the plastic with your finger, and stick the spudger about 3/4” (2 cm) away from the back of the xbox and start prying. You have to do this because that is the only spot where there are no clips in the way. If you do any less or more distance, the clips are in the way, and you’ll never be able to pry open the Xbox because the tool can’t get in.

    Saul Torres - Contestar

A youtube video I found explains this step better. You are meant to pull up on one half and push down on the other, this separates the two halves. Then use a spudger on the rear of the console to separate the clip right under the warranty sticker, then move down the back of the console to the other clips

I've managed to open my Xbox one, tested the hard drive and it has failed (error scanned and it's 90% bad sectors). I've got a new harddrive for it, but can't find where to get the correct software for it/ how it needs to be formatted. You mention this info at the start of this repair but cant see a link to the software.

If there are no links, would cloning another xbox one harddrive work as a repair?

oceanicdragon - Contestar

Ah, Sorted now. I managed to clone another hard drive. This doesn't work right off you still need to apply an update via a pend rive. But once this is done, the hard drive does pick up and work.

I haven't done this yet but I, like most other people won't want to lose any saved games etc. How do I do an exact copy from the current HDD to the SSD I'm putting in? Thanks!

garion1992 - Contestar

Hi,

how do you make the copy from HD to SSD?

hermespimentel -

You'd need to make a WIM of Partition 2 (User Content). I'm not sure about pictures/videos, but I would imagine they'd be redownloaded once you sync your Xbox Live account by logging in, just like everything else (licenses, games, etc.). You'd have to verify that however.

I go over how to create WIMs of the partitions in the Xbox One HDD Replacement wiki I wrote, which can be found on my GitHub (scroll to very bottom): http://jw0914.github.io/Wikis/

JW0914 -

Just use a software like Paragon Partmanager to COPY all sectors (not alla files) with the exact geometric data status.

Does the Xbox One accept any standard SATA II hard drive? Or does the OS place restrictions on certain hard drive models/specs?

I'd just like some direct confirmation on the matter. I get varying answers on Google, mostly outdated from many months ago.

Internets - Contestar

I have used hard drives other than the OEM ones with great success. The issue comes with using a 1TB drive. The original script from my experience doesn't accurately produce a working 1TB drive compatible with the newer firmwares and always leads to E203 or E204. I was able to modify the scripts and the methods and can successfully use any 500GB or 1TB drive. On a side note you don't need to copy anything from the original drive unless the console is in the preview program; even then you only need the contents of the System Update partition nothing else. Just format/prep the drive on PC, run the correct OSUDT from Microsoft then restore to factory once you see the dash.

MrStubbly -

So what exact files do you need to boot a new xbox one hdd, and where do I find them?

matthewmdf - Contestar

It depends on if the the console is in the preview program or if the firmware is corrupt.

If the console is on standard firmware then you don't need anything off the old hard drive. Simply format a hard drive and put it in the console and use the correct OSUDT from Microsoft. When complete, factory restore the console. If the console is in preview or corrupted; format a hard drive and copy the contents of the System Update partition (NOT System Update 2) to the new hard drive. Then simply use the reset USB files from Microsoft.

If for whatever reason you aren't sure which OSUDT to use you can always copy the System Update partition contents from the old drive and then use the reset USB. During the initial setup it will download and install the relevant update.

MrStubbly -

So my xbox got corrupted and so I am trying to just redownload the os, what format do is use? ntfs? I don't need any of the data from the corrupted hdd. Do I use the offline system update file that is named "$system update" and only have that on my hdd when i reinstall it? Does it really matter which OSUDT I put on it because I have no clue what it was running before it crashed. Thanks for any help

Matt Fischer - Contestar

You'll need to format the new drive using linux (any live distro should do) using the scripts mentioned in the video, available on github just google "xboxonehdd". Just follow the video at the top of the guide to format; run mkxboxfs.sh and then run xboxonehdd.py

OSUDT does matter. If you use the wrong one it will give you an E101 error. If you can remember if you have the newer windows 10 layout (sidebar on the left) use OSUDT2 otherwise use OSUDT3. If you don't want to do that just or your console is in the preview program copy the entire contents of the System Update partition from the corrupt drive to the System Update partition of the new drive and use the RESET files not any of the OSUDTs. OSUDT and RESET files should only ever be put on a USB not the hard drive as the files are not the same.

MrStubbly -

Will I be able to format this using windows 10? Could I clone the previous drive's partitions, delete all of the partitions then just only have the update file and A and B on it?

Matt Fischer - Contestar

And I have zero knowledge of linux, but if I have to use it, is it possible to boot it from a flash drive or something?

matthewmdf -

You could format it with windows as long as you can create partitions at the correct starting sectors and of the correct sizes. You would also want to be able to GUIDs of the partitions. Easiest thing is to download Ubuntu from their site. Create a Bootable Live USB using the installer they provide. Boot into linux, download the scripts from github and run them with terminal. Linux knowledge needed is minimal providing you know how to change directory in a windows command prompt. All commands should be in the video at the top

MrStubbly -

Hello can provide folders A and B?

danilkk2 -

No as the contents of the A and B folders are different for each system update so you would need the folders for your consoles firmware version. Unless the console is in the preview program just leave the whole drive blank and install the OSUDT and it will create the correct files/folders during installation.

MrStubbly -

My system is stuck on the latest update and I am getting the E101 errors with any of the OSUDT versions. Following various posts, I formatted the "System Update" partition on the hard drive but I must not have copied the A and B folders over correctly to my computer because I cannot locate them. In an attempt of hope, I have recreated new (but empty) A and B folders and added the updater.xvd file to the partition. If I run the process again with the OSUDT2 from a flash drive, will the Xbox update put the necessary files in the A and B folders and finally update the system?

JW0914 -

FIXED!! thanks so much for this guide.

So, I had the preview software and green screen of death for an hour followed by error message screen.

read all your posts above. thanks to all!

what I did was connect the hard drive to the laptop and format each partition (lost all my games but whatever can redownlaod) BUT for the system update partition I followed the advice above and copied the A and B folder and pasted them back after the format.

So then I put the drive back in and used the usb factory restore method and boom!

The reason I went through all this is that the usb diagnostic tool factory restore was not working AT ALL even after much help from Microsoft support. All they could say after exhausting all options was return it and get it fixed/replaced but I don't live in the US so would have been a pain.

thanks again!

kareem09 - Contestar

MrStubbly, would you care to share your modified script that does work for a 1TB+ drive. I have had success in the past but am currently not getting anything to work.

I have formatted and setup my drive like this:

- Formatted drive in Disks

- Ran python script (sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdX)

- Ran sudo bash command

- Added files from my working OG System Update partition (Contents of Folder A, Folder B, & updater.xvd)

- Ran python script again (sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdX, and confirmed with 'yes')

- Copied OSUDT2 (And OSUDT3 as well. I assumed it should be OSUDT2, since I have the newer Win10 tile based home screen but tested both for S&G.)

- Powered off my XBOX, unplugged it for about 15sec, plugged it back in, held both BIND & EJECT before powering on the system and continued to hold until I get a notification sound.

The end result of any test is that I get the E101 error.

Any further advise or help you, or anyone, could provide would be great! Thanks

Genesis730 - Contestar

It seems all tutorials miss a few things... the issue you're having is due to how the OS rebuild occurs. When the rebuild occurs, Windows will wipe and repartition the HDD if it's partition structure is different than the HDD it shipped with, which wipes the rebuild files, thus a 101 error is received.

Because no tutorial gives accurate instructions on how to rebuild the OS, I created a wiki that can be found on my GitHub (scroll to very bottom): http://jw0914.github.io/Wikis/

My hard disk is damaged and I can't access any file. Is there something that I can do?

jansen saippa - Contestar

The statement in the OP "Your Xbox One console is not capable of formatting a replacement hard drive for use as the main drive." is factually inaccurate.

The Xbox One stores the EFI boot partition and Recovery partition (containing WinRE) on the NAND flash, as well as most likely as vhd containing cli programs and scripts. Provided the GPT header has been modified in Linux prior to installation into the XB1, the XB1 will auto partition and format the HDD to the original partition layout of the original HDD that shipped with the unit

If it shipped with a 500GB HDD, and one installs a 1 or 2TB HDD without utilizing a separate script written by Juvenal1 on GitHub, the partition layout will utilize 465GB for the 5 partitions with a 465GB unallocated space after partition 5

Hi

First of all, thanks a lot for the guide.

I have an Xbox one with the hard drive with errors because of a bad update, I tried all the stupid solutions from Microsoft and none work. So I am going to change the hard drive, My question is: A friend has an Xbox one that is not working because of other problems, but the hard drive works perfectly, so I would like to know if I can put the hard drive from the Xbox One from my friend into my Xbox One with the failing hard drive and if it would work right away

Thanks for the help.

My stock XB1 HDD is a Samsung 1TB. And I tried the 500GB HGST HDD which pulled out from my PS4, it also work. And I upgrade it to the Seagate Firecuda 2TB SSHD. That also work flawlessly.

In the video it says that you can no longer do this after the December update. Is this still the case? Can I not upgrade the HD anymore?

Thanks,

Hi I need help, I mistakenly formated my original Xbox one hard disk and I lost everything, please can anyone email me his system update file so I can clone a new hard disk for it?

My email is erickekesi3@gmail.com

GAME BIZZ - Contestar

No need, I just did the upgrade without any files from the old HDD.

I suggest you do the following.

1) hold down eject + bind buttons, tap the power button to boot (keep holding both eject and blind button) until heard the 2nd boot sound effect.

2) choose factory reset in the diagnostic manual. After reboot, shut down.

3) use the Windows script to format the HDD. No need to copy anything on it. I tried it myself. 100% sure no need those folder A, folder B... the HDD can be 100% clean.

4) go to the Xbox support webpage and follow the steps about boot with error E205. It will lead you to the download the correct OSU.

5) format a USB drive to NTFS

6) unzip the OSU and copy that folder (with all files inside) to the USB drive root folder.

7) install the new HDD

8) plugin the USB drive and Ethernet cable

9) hold down eject + bind buttons to boot until the system update start.

After step 9, your machine should go back to the init state with the new HDD.

Just finished the 2TB SSHD upgrade base on this guide. However, step 4-7 is hard. With some research, I found that 's actually much easier to open up the XB1 by pressing the correct "pressure point" to unlock the clip. Just press the correct position, hear the "click" sound, then move on to the next clip. Apart from that, this guide is good. I cannot remove the wifi board connector (step 19) because it's very firm, and I don't want to apply hard force on it. But it won't affect the HDD swap, I can just open the top metal with the cable still connected and take out the HDD.

I highly suggest that swap the HDD, install only the front cover and connect ALL cables (zero screw required) to do a boot test. Only reassembly the XB1 if it can function normally. Otherwise, there will lots of work to take the HDD out and re-format it again.

Apart from Linux, there is a script for Windows to format the HDD, and I do everything via a virtual machine., extremely handy.

I have been trying for several days and in many ways and all without success, your informed process, I am hitting this button, I already achieved a triumph the console created partitions with 2tb and left 1600gb for games, before it formatted my 2tb hd as if It was 500gb and left the %#*@ 362gb, I will continue to try, I will not give up, my console is open for 10 days, I am from Brazil and I spent money to get a 2tb firecuda, and it will not be now that I will give up. Thanks

The new fall release has caused many XB1’s to fail as well as 2 of mine. I’ve tried a brand new clean drive with no resolution. Gets stuck @ 58% and goes back into error code 100. Going to try a few more things and if it does in fact work, I’ll be updating my original post with a working solution.

Chad M - Contestar

So I tried to swap a hard drive from an Xbox one to an Xbox one S. The hard drive from the original Xbox one had a ton of games that weren't mine (I bought the Xbox from someone else with 60 games downloaded on it, minus all of my games that I had already owned). Anyways, I swapped them over no problem but now neither console will load entirely. I get the booting up xbox screen for 5-10 minutes then it loads to a blank screen. I can hear audio and I can turn it on and off via the controller but the video output seems to not be working right. (Even after swapped the hard drives back to their original consoles). Am I screwed?

Hunter Logan - Contestar

This is a massive disadvantage to the ps4, on an x box one you have to open the hole console and that voids your warranty!!!

What is the BARE MINIMUM of files and partitions I have to create on a fresh SSD/HDD in order to be able to install OSU1 from a pendrive?

Let’s say I got my hands on a 500GB SSD, initialized it in Windows as a GPT drive (since XbOners use GPT drives from experience).

gf2252 - Contestar

After upgrading a dead 500gb HDD to a new 1TB the system install gets to 33% applying update / 71% overall and then returns error E102. Anyone know what’s wrong and how to fix it?

Chris Edwards - Contestar

Hey, I’ve been reading these comments and noticed as the years changed that it gets more difficult to install a new HDD/SSD in the Xbox one. As you can see it’s 2018 from my post and I really curious as to if this process still works?

I have a OGbox running preview dashboard, my question is can I just format the new drive I want and put it in the Xbox?

or do I have to format the new drive and put the A/B folders and update file on it using the Linux tut in the video? And after doing so is there any other preparation I should have to do?

Lando west - Contestar

Does anybody know if it’s possible to transfer the hard drive from a broken Xbox One into a new one? I know that you can’t with the PS4 because it encrypts the drive so other devices can’t read it, but I can’t find anything saying whether or not the Xbox One does the same thing.

Can i put sata 3 hard drive in xbox one?

David - Contestar

Could use a little help :)…

I’ve done the clone fine for my Xbox One, to a new 1TB SSD.

However when i put it all back together and tried turning on the Xbox, it powers on for around 5 seconds or so (the light on the power adapter is white), then the xbox turns off and the power brick light goes orange. During this i don’t see anything on the screen.

I’ve tried: ''''

Connecting to a different monitor,

Different wall socket,

Different kettle lead,

Using the hairdryer thing mentioned over the fan/cpu side.

I’ve even gone as far as disconnecting everything from the motherboard, introducing components 1 by 1.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Jack - Contestar

Got my parts yesterday and got the hard drive swapped out last night/this morning! I highly recommend using the video for disassembly so you can see exactly how to handle some of the more delicate parts of the process (like the ribbon cable on the front panel).

Also, one thing to note is that the HDD comes preformated for Xbox One; HOWEVER, you’ll still need a thumb drive with about 8GB of space and formatted to NTFS so you can install the Xbox OSU1 folder to it. The OSU1 folder is to perform an offline update once you finish all the manual labor in swapping the drive.

To get to this file, follow this link: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/...

Step 1: “I need to update my console offline.”

Step 2: “Original Xbox One.”

Steps 3, 4, & 5: “No”

Step 6: “Continue”

Step 7: “No”

Steps 8 & 9: (Complete the steps provided to download OSU1 and install it to the console)

Hope this helps and saves you a bit of legwork in getting your new HDD up and running! Cheers

Benjamin Anderson - Contestar

Can confirm that this way works. My original HDD was toast, so I bought new Seagate 1TB HDD, put it right in without formatting it, installed OSU1 update and that was all. Xbox works and it took like 2 hours.

Thanks Benjamin :)

So I have had my XBox One S for a couple of years now and it stopped working. Could you tell me what the problem might be? So specifically the power button will light up and ding on like usual, then I hear the fan kick on, so it seems to start fine, but the power button will just blink and I can hear the HDD try to read but then it turns off about 10-15 seconds of blinking. I plugged the HDMI cable into the TV but it won’t detect the xbox is connected. I just bought a new SSD to replace the HDD but I’m a little worried that it might be a different issue. PLEASE HELP! Please tell me it’s not a motherboard issue :(.

I can’t put the top of the back Xbox one on, the front clips won’t clip, and ideas on how to do this w/o breaking it?

Blake Bianco - Contestar

Hey, this guide was incredibly helpful in getting to my HDD, but I was hoping someone could help me out:

Recently my apartment was hit by a lightning strike and now my Xbox One turns off a few seconds after turning it on. I have game data that is user created content on the HDD that is extremely valuable to me that IS NOT synced on the live cloud. I really want to get this data backed up on the cloud or at least integrated onto another Xbox. If I connect this HDD into a different Xbox One internally, will the Xbox load this data as if it were my original Xbox and allow me to access everything on it?

I really would appreciate any advice on how to recover this data, cause I’m afraid of plugging into something and having it saved over permanently. Thanks in advanced!

Alice Grace - Contestar

For the steps where you slide a plastic opening tool through the back, I recommend you slide a flat, thin plastic triangle through instead.

Erik Bergh - Contestar

I heard if you want replace the HDD buy SSD. The capacity of the new SSD you wanna use must be at lease same or bigger than the original HDD (mine is 500GB), otherwise Xbox won’t let you install the system. Is that true?

yanglihang403 - Contestar

ssd are sata too, so this might be workin'. i've bought a kingston 0.48 tb ssd and i am just reading this article to know how install it.

LLOYD GARMADON -

to be honest i would rather buy a new xbox than do this - if you screw it up youre screwed and those hdds mostly die out of usage and so does the xbox, making upgrading it useless. - other old hardware inside the xbox will also wear out (thermal paste/cpu/vent etc) the hdd is only a precursor of this.

*and also : how to get the operating system on that new hdd ? - i assume this is also a different process ?
