Identification and Background
Currently the Harley Davidson Sportster is one most popular and widespread motorcycles in the United States. It's simple construction and no-nonsense demeanor has made it a favorite of motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere.
Although the Sportster has been produced by Harley Davidson since 1957, the Evolution Engine has only been the standard since 1986. Since then, there have been minor revisions to the motorcycle over the years. The Sportster is considerably smaller than any other Harley-Davidson Motorcycle, and unlike the larger models, it has the engine and transmission integrated into a single unit.
All of the model numbers for Sportsters with Evolution Engines start with "XL", however, this is not printed anywhere on the bike. To determine if you have a sportster, check the Vehicle Identification Number located on the right down-tube, near the front of the bike. If the 5th digit is a "C" then the motorcycle is a Sportster.
