E-Bikes

Background and Identification

An electric bicycle also called an electric bike or e-bike, is a bicycle with an electric motor that assists the rider with propulsion. Electric bicycles typically fall into two categories, those that assist the rider’s pedal-power and those that add a throttle so the rider has to pedal very little. All electric bicycles retain the ability to be pedaled by the rider. Without the ability to pedal, the vehicle is classified as an electric motorcycle.

Electric bicycles typically use rechargeable batteries and can travel up to 16 to 20 miles per hour (25 to 32 kilometers per hour). E-bikes are built with some form of control, electric motors, and rechargeable batteries. They are commonly powered by either brushed or brushless hub motors. Electric power-assist systems can be added to nearly any pedal bicycle using a chain drive, belt drive, hub motor, or friction drive. Some e-bikes have batteries attached to the frame while others include batteries housed within the tube. Typical electric bicycles require eight hours to charge the batteries, which provide a range of between 25 to 30 miles (40 to 48 kilometers).

Many electric bicycles experience similar issues as non-electric bicycles including flat tires, brake issues, and off-track chains. Electric bicycles may experience additional problems mainly related to the vehicle’s batteries or motor.
