Acer Gateway Chromebook CBO314-1H is Overheating
Your computer becomes unusually hot even during light use, or overheats under normal workloads.
Too Many Background Applications Running
If your Chromebook is running extremely hot or slow try this option to fix it, open your Chromebook’s task manager with Search + Esc, and clear things that you don’t need, such as unnecessary chrome extensions or extra programs. If you are running too many tabs at once it can cause the processor to run harder causing it to overheat, keep a minimum amount of tabs open at one time to prevent this.
Resource-Heavy Extensions Installed
Check to see if you have too many resource-heavy extension installed on the computer, on the top right of a chrome window, select More (three vertical dots) -> Extensions -> Manage Extensions. Disable / uninstall extensions you’ve installed that are not necessary for the operation of your computer, or you may not recognize. These may be eating up resources and are inadvertently heating up and slowing down your computer.
Processes Unresponsive
If the Chromebook is overheating and unresponsive, reboot the computer by doing these steps, press and hold the Power button for 10-30 seconds until the screen turns black and lights turn off. To perform a hard reboot, press and hold your Refresh button for 3-5 seconds, then tap the power button. After a reboot, your Chromebook should be running with the absolute minimum requirements to function and should reduce the amount of processing required, reducing its heat.
Poor Airflow
This Acer Gateway Chromebook uses heatsinks for cooling, and has no active cooling elements. Even though nothing is actively moving the air, the Chromebook still needs airflow to move its hot air out of the system and cool air back through. To improve airflow, avoid putting your Chromebook in enclosures and near other electronics that generate heat. Use external methods of cooling such as a fan or air conditioning.
Insufficient Cooling System Performance
As the previous tip mentions, the Chromebook does not have active cooling elements and as such it has a harder time improving its physical conditions like heat. Use these tips to improve temperatures for your device externally.
Never place a fanless laptop on a bed, blanket, couch, carpet, or other soft surface. These surfaces act as insulation and trap heat. Preferably, place your computer on a hard surface such as wood, metal, or a desk.
Elevate the device using a laptop stand or riser to lift your Chromebook off the desk. Even a small gap eliminates heat reflection and allows air to move freely under the chassis.
Use an external cooling method. Just like the previous section, look for a separate cooling solution like fans. Avoid using ice or melting types of cooling as a direct method as the water may damage circuitry.
Find a computer stand with a built-in fan. Those use active fans to cool your laptop from the bottom. Although, if you’ve gotten this far, it is likely an internal issue that a stand with fans may not solve.
Failing Internal Cooling Components
If none of the above options work, you may need to replace cooling components inside the system. For instructions on how to do so, click here. TODO LINK
