Linksys WRT54G Troubleshooting
The Linksys WRT54G was one of the first wireless routers on the market.
The Internet Just Stopped Working! ¶
This is a troubleshooting guide for the Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router. During the lifetime of your router, it is very likely that internet connection problems will arise. Chances are that the router will fail to connect to the internet. Hopefully, issues like this will not come up often, but when they do, here is a short list of things you can try to fix the problem yourself.
It could just be your computer ¶
Sometimes, the router is not at fault when the interent stops working.
First, try disconnecting and reconnecting your computer from the internet, or turning the wireless on your computer off and on.
If that simple reset didn't work, try rebooting your computer.
If you are still unable to connect, make sure other computers on the wireless network are unable to connect to your interet as well. That way you know it's not just your computer, and further action will need to be taken.
It could just be your modem ¶
Turn off or unplug your modem. Wait for 10 seconds, and turn it back on or plug it back in.
Now, for the router ¶
More often than not, simply rebooting your router will solve the problem. To do this, unplug your router from the power. Let it sit for 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
Locate the reset button on the back of the device. It is a little red button on the left of the left most port, and hold it for 10 seconds with either a pen or pencil point.
It might be a bad ethernet cord ¶
If you have another ethernet cord, try swapping it out for the one that you have currently plugged in to your computer.
Consult your manual ¶
At this point, you have pretty much tried everything that can be done without taking your router apart. Before you go any further, try consulting your router's manual that you got when you purchased the router.
There might be some other ideas in that manual, or there will be a phone number you can call for assistance.
The router is not turning on ¶
This time the hardware is just not working. You cannot connect to the internet and, for some reason, the router wont light up or there is something physically wrong with it.
The lights are not lighting up ¶
So the lights are not lighting up. You are positive the power cord is plugged in and that the cord itself is not damaged. It might be due to a Functional Component on the motherboard that needs to be replaced.
The casing is broken ¶
If the casing is broken and you suspect there has been damage to a component on the motherboard, you will need to replace the Functional Component.
If the damage is only visible on the casing itself, there are two options. If the damage has been done to the Blue Plastic Casing then you can replace it. If the damage has been done to the black and blue plastic casing, you can remove the motherboard and replace the Black Casing.
If the motherboard itself has been damaged, it may be a good idea to invest in a new router.
The antennas are broken ¶
If you have reason to suspect your Antennas have been damaged, perhaps one is in two pieces, then they need to be replaced.
