Not Enough Ram
If your computer crashes during normal operation, crashes during memory intensive tasks, or beeps and will not boot up, this means you have bad RAM or that you do not have enough Ram. Install RAM into your computer.
Hard Drive Error
Even though you have a hard drive in your computer, there may be an error on it. This can happen when the user shuts off the computer by pressing the power button instead of initiating the shutdown sequence through the operating system. To resolve this issue, get a Windows DVD for the version that you have. Please note that the specific version does not matter, only that it is for Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10. Boot to the DVD, and choose “Repair your computer,” then click next. On this screen, pick “Startup Repair” and let it run. After this, your HP Notebook Laptop should boot correctly. If your computer does not boot correctly and still has issues, you may need to replace your hard drive.
No Free Space in Hard Drive
Search Disk Cleanup in the Start Menu on your Windows laptop. Click the Disk Cleanup button in the disk properties window. Select the types of files you want to delete and click OK. This includes temporary files, log files, files in your recycle bin, and other unimportant files. Remember to uninstall space-hungry applications.
Sporadic Touchpad
Touchpad is difficult to control, or it is not responding.
Touchpad Button
Check to see if the touchpad is turned off. The laptop should have a button next to the touchpad that can turn the touchpad on or off.
Corrupted Operating System Files
Your drivers may need to be updated to its latest version. Drivers are files from hardware devices that communicate to the operating system. Use Windows Device Manager to find details regarding hardware and drivers. First, go to the start screen and type in Device Manager and press enter. Second, double click mice and other pointing devices. Third, locate touchpad, right-click the icon, and select update Driver Software. Finally, search for updates.
Prone to Crashing
Computer freezes and does not respond.
Overheating
Ensure that the computer is located in an environment with a flat level surface and that there is at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides of the laptop. A lack of these conditions will lead to the inability of the laptop to cool itself.
Temporary Files
Windows generates temporary files while in use. These files store settings and data for temporary use. These files will accumulate over time, and could slow down your computer. To clean away temporary files, go to “Start”, and search for “Disk Cleanup.” Running Disk Cleanup could take a minute or two to complete. Running Disk Cleanup weekly is a good way to promote good performance.
Perform Hard Drive Test
Plug AC adapter in the computer and turn off the computer for at least five seconds. Restart the computer and press the f10 key repeatedly to enter the BIOS Setup menu. Use the arrow keys to locate the Primary Hard Drive Self-Test option and select it using the Enter key. Allow time for the test to run.
Short Battery Life
Charge depletes quickly.
Faulty Battery
Plug charger into the laptop for a 30-60 min period. If the laptop dies shortly after unplugging the charger, the battery is faulty. Consider purchasing a new battery. Replace the battery using this guide.
Faulty Charger
Ensure that the charger is plugged into a working wall outlet, plugged into laptop properly, and the connections between charger cord and AC adapter are secure. Make sure that the charge light on the laptop is on, indicating there is a charge. If the light is not on and the charger is properly secure, the charger is faulty. Consider purchasing a replacement charger.
Faulty Speakers
Computer speakers are quiet or silent
Sound is Turned Off
Check your settings on the bottom-right side of the screen. Click the speaker icon and turn the volume up. If that doesn’t work, try turning the volume up in the software settings if using an internet based program.
Malfunctioning Speakers
Try connecting a different pair of speakers or headphones. If connecting a different pair of speakers or set of headphones worked, the speakers are broken. It is recommended that you contact the manufacturer of the speakers or computer for a new replacement if they are still under warranty. Or, see our replacement guide here.
