iPhone 3GS Battery Replacement

Mi Problema

A few weeks ago, I found my iPhone 3GS in a box in the closet and decided to charge it up and see how it was doing. It After a good charge, it turned on right away and I marveled at the older iOS and how small and old the device felt. How did I ever use this as my main phone?! Well, a few days after that, I noticed the battery started to swell as it pressed the screen out a tiny bit. So, I decided to order a replacement battery.

Mi Solución

The repair started off really well. iFixit is always a great resource for both the repairs and the parts. However, when I reached the logic board, as I unscrewed the first screw, I noticed that the battery had started to swell and press even more against the logic board! As soon as I removed each screw, the logic board made a very audible "POP!" as the battery expanded to fill the space. I could actually hear the battery expanding! I was VERY careful with each screw and eventually got the logic board off and carefully removed the now very swollen battery. In the end, I was able to easily replace the battery and the 3GS is like new. But check out the picture of the battery! (I did dispose of it properly!)

Mi Consejo

Just be careful out there. The repair wasn't difficult to do, but if your battery is swollen, take your time with the repair. You certainly don't want to puncture the battery when you are trying to remove it!
