My iPhone recently got water-damaged. I took it to someone who cleaned it out and replaced the battery, but the backlight doesn't seem to work. Now, when I plug it into my computer, it says "connect to iTunes," but because of the password I had on my phone, iTunes can't do a system recovery. Can anybody help me fix my phone?

When you say the backlight doesn't seem to work, do you mean you can faintly see images, or there is nothing on the screen at all?
If you can faintly see images, try shining a flashlight laterally across the screen and enter your password.
If you can see nothing, first check to make sure the display assembly was actually plugged in when the repair was made. You can do this with our Display Assembly repair guide.
If the 3 cables are indeed plugged in but there is nothing on the screen, you must replace the display assembly.

I can see what's on screen it's just the light that doesn't work, this isn't my main issue however, the main problem is the fact that it comes up with a "connect to itunes" message when I plug it in or even just turn it on, and there is no where for me to enter my SIM PIN, I have tried various methods of system recovery and jail breaking to get round this problem, however at the end of the procedure for full system recovery it requires me to enter my SIM PIN, which I can't do as there is no where to enter it. A thought that occured to me is perhaps the part of the phone which reads the SIM is damaged?

Do you have a component spec or value for the coil?
coils can be taken off from other phone's like iphone 2G, try to look for defective motherboard over ebay,craiglist..etc.

I had the same problem. My phone got dropped in water and after drying everything worked except the screen was dim (no brightness). I replaced the cheap LCD part and wallah it works now. I don't think this a coil issue as mentioned by one poster here (at least with mine it wasn't).

Amit - what was the "check LCD part" you replaced. I have the same problem - 3gs dropped in water - all works except for backlight on screen and home button. Any suggestions

iPhone 3GS (that I know of) do not always required a replaced LCD to fix the back light. There is a coil called the 6r8 coil that is an extremely small component on the logic board, that tends to break, and requires re-soldering to fix.
Other than this and on most other versions I am sure a simply LCD replace MAY fix the problem, although I have just started fixing mobile phones, so I am not 100% as of yet on everything.

you can get both the backlight 6R8 coil and 109 IC here
Coil can check it by Ohm meter on buzzer celective or how many MΩ is. But whe you listen the buzzer sound's that means that coil it work's perfect!!! So the myth arround (change or remove that coil) is not true!!!
That 80% have problem and is that you have to change is the voltage regulator IC 109B.

Guys, i just follow someone's idea to use a flashlight to get to settings, and managed to turn Auto Brightness OFF and slide the bar to the lowest point. Turned the iphone off and the on and Voilaaa! I can see what im doing with a very low light but operational at least. But the minute you crank up the slider to make it brighter it will go back to black. So, maybe with these symptoms an expert can tell me if this smells like coil, IC or what?! thanks!
