@sam92233 Rice does not work. It does absolutely nothing to help you with this repair. All it does is waste time and waste food. Check here https://www.ifixit.com/News/30047/rice-i... for more on this. Most repairers stay away from water damaged devices since the labor cost exceeds the economic value of the device. The success rate for a water damage repair is pretty slim. Some shops specialize on this type of repair for data recovery, but the cost is accordingly high.

For now, you must stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse. This may further damage your phone.

The very first step I would take is to disassemble your phone. Use the guides from here Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to disassemble your phone. Remove the main board and the charging board. You will have to remove all the EMI shields from the main-board (some need to be desolder while others just pop open with the help of a small screw driver). If you do not remove the shields, you are not cleaning the boards. My personal preference is to replace the charging board since it is usually inexpensive and readily available. This will always rule that board out as the cause for any issues. It provides for a known-well starting point for any further troubleshooting.

Take a close look at all components and connectors. Look for any signs of corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. . Once you got any gross contamination cleaned, use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and clean your parts some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for an Apple iPhone 3G but all the steps are still pertinent to your phone as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning.

Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. You do not need to leave it to dry for a day. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and dissipate the water.

The importance here is the cleaning. It would of course be best to get it ultrasonically cleaned Do not forget to replace the battery. This is a must and not an option. It will fail if you do not take care of it now.

After that, reassemble your phone and re-evaluate. For as long as you have not cleaned your board and replaced the battery, everything is just a guess. Keep in mind that water damage is the hardest to troubleshoot and to repair. It does not matter if is was exposed for 2 seconds or 2 hours, what matters is where the water (particulates) did the damage.

I wouldn’t trust 90% ipa for a permanent solution for anyone who thinks that. Even 99% IPA leaves a mild (harmless) residue on solder , it’s why you can’t get 100% IPA . When it evaporates it has left over trace. Okay 70%+ is better than water. But always with 99% or some other chemical that is specifically designed for board cleaning there are other products also.

I honestly think everyone and every home should keep at least a litre of 99%IPA in the first aid cupboard next to the first aid box for accidents like this , No joke.

Obviously not everyone can have an ultrasonic cleaner, but those that can should .

correct. Hence the implication to use " 90%+ isopropyl alcohol", which means 90% or more, not less than.

@basementdax

You can buy 99.8% pure IPA (example only -zoom in to view description on label). This is about as close to being pure as you can get, but I think that any residue when using it would be negligible in the context of things. Been using this for years with no problems

Wouldn't use it in a first aid cabinet though, would initially prefer to use clean, running water as IPA can cause tissue damage if applied to an open wound, but maybe @oldturkey03 can enlighten me on what's best ;-)

Cheers

@jayeff you are 100% correct on the IPA for wound cleaning. Greater then 70% is not advised. 70% isopropyl alcohol kills organisms by denaturing their proteins and dissolving their lipids and is effective against most bacteria, fungi and many viruses, but is ineffective against bacterial spores (CDC, 2020). Greater % then that Is contraindicated. It evaporates very quickly which does not allow it to penetrate cell walls and kill bacteria, and therefore isn’t as good for disinfecting surfaces For any initial cleaning we only use chlorhexidine and running water :-)

Lol I meant for water damage devices not wound cleaning. Seriously I only use 99 % you say it’s negligible with 90% Have you tried it on a circuit board and checked it a month later? If so then fair play. Besides there can’t be much price difference why bother risk it?

Dried up water will still cause corrosion. 99% Isopropyl alcohol will disperse the water and stop/ reverse corrosion before evaporating away. Rice is okay for drying external areas , but if water got on the board it won’t stop long term corrosion. Rice also won’t help water trapped under the board shielding, where as IPA will.

If it was on when it fell in water then went off on it’s own..something shorted out, not a good sign! I’d take it to a repair shop who should test and clean everything up for you tbh. Depends if there’s important photos or data on there or not whether you decide to attempt your own repair.

DO NOT charge or turn on before it’s cleaned up/ dried out whatever it could cause more internal damage!
