Ouch! Not good. This series uses a set of ribbon cables to connect the display panel to the T-CON board which sits within the uppercase. The ribbon cables have become damaged which will require a new display assembly.
Often I see this when the chin plate has fractured and a shard has pierced into the cable, or the hinge edge was banged.

Thank you for that explanation. I gather the ribbon cables are integral to the screen and can’t be replaced on their own (like for instance the hard drive cable can)? Since my screen is undamaged, it’s just the display when opened very far — works perfectly when I only open the cover a little :-).
@stevenfost22962 Yes, you're correct that the flex cables are non-replaceable. Unfortunately, Apple made the displays on the MacBooks pretty much a completely integrated unit such that almost nothing in it is replaceable. Virtually every repair you ever see having to do with a MacBook screen consists of "replace it", since there's nothing else you can do.
@stevenfost22962 - Sorry I wish we could replace the cables, there is just no way.
