Would a small crack on the screen cause the display to go totally out? Laptop only works on external display. Webcam still works find, wondering if it's the display card or the display itself.

seems it was a bad display after all. When these crack, they no longer provide any display, only with an external monitor.

Very strange then that you could still see the Asus logo OK on startup if the display was faulty.
my apology for the lack of communication. No, I didn't see a BIOS or startup screen on the laptop. There was no info displayed at startup. I've swapped displays before, but always was able to see something displayed. Didn't think a crack would cause it to go out all together.

Your laptop has 2 GPUs, one integrated in the CPU (Intel) and one a discrete Nvidia GPU mounted on the motherboard.
It would be unusual for both to fail at once.
Try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop screen and check if you can see any images at all. They will be very faint if any are there, so trying this in a darkened room may help.
If they are images it's a backlight problem. Either a faulty backlight power supply on the motherboard, a faulty video cable or more likely a faulty screen.
If there are no images then either a faulty video cable or more likely a faulty screen.

Hi Jayeff, I'm leaning on a faulty display as I don't see any light images to suggest it's a backlight. This being a newer model display than what I've worked on in the past (very thin), I wasn't sure if the displays would fail if it had a crack. I also didn't want to order a screen and have to return it if it's not the display.
Your thoughts on these thin displays, will they work if cracked?

Do you get the Asus logo on startup?
If it goes straight to Windows without a logo, start the laptop and then use the external monitor to navigate to disable "fast startup".
Here's how:
Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Under 'Shutdown settings uncheck the 'Turn on fast startup' box.
Restart the laptop and check if the Asus logo appears on the screen.
On startup the Intel GPU is selected by default and it is only when the laptop boots into Windows that the Nvidia GPU drivers are loaded and it is used.
If the logo appears you should be able to get into BIOS OK with a display.
This proves that the screen is OK and that there's a problem with the Nvidia GPU - drivers perhaps.
Maybe when using the external monitor check the status of the display adapters in Device Manager to make sure that both GPU adapters are OK as far as Windows is concerned.
If you don't get a display at all on the laptop screen then it is likely the screen. Being a thin screen it mightn't take much to make it fail. Even though there may only be a slight crack on the outside, you don't know the extent of the internal damage in the screen as it can't be seen
Yes, I see the logo.
I've ordered a replacement display in hopes that will fix the problem. I'll be sure to update this post with the results.

If you see the logo did you get into BIOS with the display working OK?
Before starting the laptop, press and hold the F2 key and then press the Power button. Do not release F2 until you are in BIOS.
If you can view the menus OK there is nothing wrong with the display.
You need to use the external monitor so that you can navigate through Windows to get to Device Manager to check the Nvidia GPU drivers etc.
If I do a factory restore, wouldn't that clear the problem?
