Hi @splitintwain

There is no separate cmos battery connected to the motherboard in a Dell 7420.

The RTC (Real Time Clock aka cmos) battery supply is provided by the main battery.

Here is the service manual for the laptop.

Go to p.27 (or p.30 depending on battery type installed), to view the procedure to remove the main battery.

Take note that it mentions that by disconnecting the battery that the laptop is RTC reset i.e. the BIOS settings will be reset to the default factory settings.

If you wish to reset the BIOS and restore any possibly corrupted settings by removing the battery you simply have to disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard and not remove the battery itself.

It may also be prudent that once the battery cable has been disconnected to press and hold the laptop's power button for 15 seconds, to ensure that all the residual power stored on the motherboard has been drained as well, before reconnecting the battery cable to the motherboard.

Thank you, @jayeff, that is very helpful! And it also explains why I could not find the battery after a complete disassembly of the laptop. I appreciate the quick response!
