iPhone SE 2020 REBOOT LOOP - THERMALMONITORD

Hello to all and especially to anyone who can help me solve my problem...! My iPhone SE (2020) has gone into the 180 second spiral after being charged on an external charger which seemed to overheat in the process (charger rather than phone). I’ve tried a hard reset, update in recovery mode and restore in recovery mode, none of which has worked. The panic log gives the following info and more besides (afraid i’m following instructions rather than understanding per se in this process but for what it’s worth...) if anyone can decipher it and tell me that it’s not Latin for ‘buy a new phone’...

Thank you in advance for all helpful replies.

Okay, to start with, what you're looking at is called a panic log, and it consists of data that gets recorded when the operating system kernel encounters an unrecoverable error and decides it needs to reboot the phone. This process is called a kernel panic and fortunately one of our members who is a former Apple technician has written a wiki page giving us mere mortals a chance at enlightenment.

iPhone Kernel Panics - iFixit

From that page, we find that the information we really want is a line showing us what sensor it's missing that's causing it to panic. From your log file, we find that this is what we're looking for.

Missing sensor(s): mic1 \n

"mic1" is the clue here. Going back to the wiki page, here's what we find.

Missing Sensor Location Likely Issue
Mic1 - Bottom Microphone On the Charge Port Assembly Charge Port Assembly or its connector on the Logic Board

That tells us that the logic board cannot read the sensor on the lightning port assembly. Now it is theoretically possible that this could be a logic board issue, but to be honest I've yet to see it. Every time I've encountered this particular sensor failure, replacing the charging port assembly has resolved the problem. Here's the guide you will need to do that repair.

iPhone SE 2020 Lightning Connector Assembly Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

As far as replacement parts, I usually go with the big three; Amazon, eBay and AliExpress, depending on your timeframe, quality and cost tradeoffs. Here's one that came up on my cursory search that would work.

Amazon.com: fonefunshop Compatible with iPhone SE 2020 Charging Port Microphone Flex Cable White : Cell Phones & Accessories

That should get you going again; I'm guessing a bad cable or charger has damaged your charging port assembly and killed the sensor. Hopefully nothing worse happened and replacing the flex assembly will fix you right up.

Well. I have good news, and I have bad news. The good news is I know why your iPhone is restarting. The bad news is, it might not be the most straightforward fix.

This panic indicates that the phone isn't getting a check-in from a specific "sensor"—in this case, "mic1". Mic 1 is typically part of the charge port assembly. Replacing the charge port may fix your issue.

If it does not, this could be one of the signature board faults of the 2020 SE. For some reason, this board is particularly susceptible to developing a break in the line that carries this signal to the CPU. It typically breaks somewhere under the SIM tray (there is a line for touch that commonly develops a similar fault). A break in the line part way through, means the signal never gets to where it's going. The same missing sensor error would result.

The fix for this requires much more advanced repair work and requires soldering a tiny jumper wire between two points on the board to reconnect this line.

Alisha, that's why it's awesome having you around! I was not aware that this was a known problem with the SE 2020. Definitely worth changing out the charging port unless you're good at diode mode testing on the board to verify the integrity of the I2C1 signals.

@dadibrokeit I happened to be watching a lot of board repair content (I always am, but it was really when I was in the thick of it) when this issue started to get documented. I am always amazed at the ingenuity that finds these issues and fixes them. Board repair is both a bit chaos and a bit art. And a lot pattern recognition.

Alisha, thank you so much for this reply - and sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I just flew across the world and am a bit upside down. I did dig out the charging port replacement fix through other posts on the site but when i tried to order the part it was out of stock in Europe ( I live in France). i also read in some of the reviews that the process is not without its risks of damage for the uninitiated so in the end i have dropped the phone off to a local repair shop. Last i heard he had changed the port but it still seemed to be rebooting so i’m beginning to fear that the ‘bad news’ part of your reply might apply...:( . I will contact him today and pass on the info in your post. I’ll add an update when i have news. In the meantime, i do, of course , remain eternally grateful for your help. You’re a star.

just to add that, weirdly, before i left it in for repair, for a short period the phone seemed to work perfectly and went for about an hour without rebooting. Unfortunately it then went back to its infuriating behaviour.
