Safe way to discharge a swollen battery?

Block Image

I have a few batteries for this camera and one of my spares has swollen a bit. Not a big deal as I have more to fall back on but this one is no longer viable.

Considering it is swollen and cracked I do not want to run this pack if I can help it. Is there another way to quickly discharge it so I can dispose of it?

The best you can do is pop the battery into the frig to lower its temp (not freezer) the use the battery monitoring it’s case temp. Letting it run down as far as it can go, you may need to pop it in the frig a second time then on the last bit let it warm up as you finish the discharge.

As far as running it no chance in he-double hockey sticks am I putting it in the camera. Grip only.

My plan is to run it down room temp first to knock off most of the charge left. Once I knock off most of the charge then I'll fridge it.

@nick - Nick do the reverse! Frig first so the battery doesn’t overheat as you discharge, then allow it to discharge from cold to room temp to finish it off. A cold batt discharges slower which we want here.

@danj Hopefully it was just a bum pack and not my grip reverse charging it... Gah, knowing when these were made would be good so I can presume if the others (I have 3 in service, 1 decommed) are a potential headache. Guess my rule of considering used batteries consumed saved me here; if the shoot matters bring real Sony packs, buy some OEM Sonys or bring ones I can rely on.

@nick what I do with my batteries is that I connect a 12V 10W halogen light bulb to them. It's enough of a drain to cause no issue with any increase in heat during discharge. One night outside in a bucket with sand and done with it. After that of to the proper processing place it goes.

I might need to discard another one >_<. Potentially showing signs too. This folks is why batteries which come with devices should be treated as CONSUMED unless you know for absolute fact it’s new and has years left. Batteries are a consumable good and should be handled accordingly.

Don’t throw it out sure. But why would I trust batteries which have had a 25% confirmed failure rate and maybe soon 50%?
