Cpu and Ram compatiblity

I have an old dell inspiron n5030 with pentium t4500 processor(TDP 35W), would changing it for a core 2 quad q9100(TDP 45W) create any problems?
And also after swapping it out would 2x4GB of ram work(earlier on computer did not wanted to boot with those: SODIMM 204 pin DDR3 PC3 -1333 MHz 2x4GB (8192 MB ram)

Hi @cus

The type of CPU and ram is determined by what is supported by the motherboard's IO (Input/Output i.e. north bridge/south bridge) chipset.

This IC is the interface between the CPU and the rest of the motherboard.

According to the Dell driver support page for the model, your laptop's motherboard has an Intel GM45 Express chipset. (Type chipset in the driver support page Keyword search box)

The specifications show what types of CPU and ram it supports.

The other thing regarding compatible CPUs is to find one that fits into the same socket as is used on the motherboard. Here's a list of chipset compatible CPUs but you need to make sure that it is a Socket P type CPU so that it will plug in and work.

I have read that the model will support 8GB of ram but it needs to be DDR3L 1066 (PC3L-8500) as anything higher won't work

So, the RAM, i bought needs to be different and if the processor is listed as being on the same socket, and is compatible with GM45, this means that the CPU, should work?

@cus

Yes that's right as long as the correct ram is also installed, otherwise the laptop won't get past POST (Power On Self Test) when starting

The ram you mentioned in the comment in the answer above this answer i.e. DDR3L Samsung M471B5173QH0-YK0 4 GB, won't work as its frequency spec is too high i.e. 1600 not 1066

Thank you both @aactech and @jayeff for you hearing me out, and explaining stuff to me, have a great day.

  • This is what I could find for CPU's:

Core2 Duo T6600

Core2 Duo T9400

Core2 Duo T9500

  • The Dell Inspiron 15 N5030 requires DDR3L and can go up to 2 x 4GB for a total of 8GB.

The "L" is for lower voltage as in 1.35V instead of 1.5V Note the 1.35V.

DDR3-1600 • CL=11 • NON-ECC • SODIMM • 204-pin • 1.35V • 2Rx8 • PC3-12800

  • A SSD drive will speed things up more than anything else. Just make sure it is compatible.

About the ssd part, I know, but I kinda do multiple, things at once, changing wifi card, antena, ram, disk, maybe even keyboard, soooo, yeah, but also disk wont change the speeds as much since it is a SATA 1 port inside, so the speeds will only get about 2x times better, still I will probably do so, and about RAM thank you very much for that.

Also, does it mean that this RAM will work: DDR3L Samsung M471B5173QH0-YK0 4 GB ?

Hi @cus

It seems @jayeff is correct. I gave you data from the Crucial site. Again, the Samsung RAM you mention is DDR3L 1600MHz so apparently too fast for your laptop. You will often find contradicting information on the Web. But the only real solution is to try as specs change with versions of the same model.

@aactech

Also check what chipset is installed by looking in Device Manager.

That way it saves opening up the laptop to find out and also getting the wrong parts.

Cheers
