Mac is alive, but dead.

I can't figure this out for the life of me. This Mac was involved in a water spill and the keyboard was unresponsive with some keys.

It was torn all the way down. Besides the keyboard, it was dry internally and it became a basket case after my buddy failed to repair the keyboard due to the rivets. Months later a top case was ordered and it was put back together. This is what it's doing:

There is no screen, no Mac chime, and no touch bar. However, the keyboard functions (caps lock works), and If I triple-click the power button, text-to-speech comes on and the computer talks to me. One time as well I heard the plug-in chime when I plugged it in, but that's the last time I heard it.

I have absolutely no clue where and what to look at. The symptoms are very odd. Yes, a lot of bolts are misplaced, and such but everything is there and together.

Thanks for any help!

@natetryingtofix Have you tried plugging the mac into an external display?

No, I didn't. Not sure what to do as well since I don't have any USB-c to HDMI dongles. I'll probably order one up just for the occasion.

I’ll probably have some more specific guidance with some more details, but I would have a look at the MacBook Black Screen troubleshooting page for some ideas. There’s a triage section that might be especially helpful to get you in the right vicinity. I have some theories.

There are a lot of factors here to consider so it might be a bit of a ride. But sometimes these sort of issues are some silly thing.

Also, you mention you replaced the top case. Did the new top case already have a trackpad installed? Or did you transfer it from the original?

I'll take a look at the page. The top case came with pretty much everything but the logic board and the power button. I transferred the power button but left the original trackpad. It seems to be functioning as if I press on it when the Mac is open it clicks.

Hey so I followed the guide. Unfortunately, there's nos PRAM or SMC to be reset however, I noticed something. In a dark room, even though there is no backlight, the screen does come on. I can see it illuminate, however, there is no software. When I close it and open it I can see when the screen turns on, and it responds to a hard reset however, the screen and keyboard just come on with no other response as usual. There isn't any light with the touch bar though. By some miracle is it possible macOS is corrupted or something of the sorts?

@natetryingtofix Could be firmware, or theoretically software.

Just for my personal amusement, if you know the username and password of the accounts, try logging in. Even if you can’t see the screen you can use the keyboard to get yourself in.

You can either type the first letter of the username you are trying to sign into, or hit the right arrow key on what we’re hoping is the Lock Screen you just can’t see. Hit return to select the account and type in the password. Hit return again and hope.

See if that gets touchbar to appear. The touchbar will not be on unless the disk has been unlocked. It’s sort of transparent to the user, but the logon screen from a powered on from off state is also the cue to decrypt your storage. And no touchbar before drive decryption.

@flannelist Unfortunately the password was lost after 2 years of no use. However I did get to play with it a bit. I got a usb c to hdmi dongle and although it gives a imput to the monitor, it is nothing. Rather than pitch black it’s just this weird LCD color. You can tell it’s somthing, but it’s nothing. I also played around with the TOS. The computer still recognizes my account, I can get it to spell out the name using TOS and I can type in passwords. It’s almost as if everything’s there but the gpus not putting anything out. Not sure what it is at this point. Is there any way to log in/unlock that Mac with another Mac or pc? I would like to test if the touch bar turns on, but I won’t be able to reset the password without a screen.

@flannelist sorry to bombard you again here. Another weird things happened. I wiped the OS using DFU mode and the screen still lacks color, but it makes the max chime. I’m almost certain it’s the logic board at this point. Any advice? I can micro solder myself if I know where to look and what exactly needs replaced, but if that’s not possible at home then I guess I could send it out if there is someone who does it reasonably.

It seems like there may still be some underlying issues from the water spill. Despite the keyboard being replaced, there are still abnormal symptoms such as no screen, no Mac chime, and no touch bar. It's possible that there might be a problem with the internal connections or components.

I would recommend taking the Mac to a professional repair service or an Apple Store for further diagnosis. They have the expertise and tools to properly assess the situation and identify any potential hardware issues. They can provide you with a more accurate assessment and guide you towards the best course of action for resolving the problem.
